christmas-gifts
Thanks to an unexpected home improvement – we discovered a leak in our bathroom and spent two weeks with contractors coming and going – I’m far from ready for Christmas even though I’ve had 356 days to prepare. What can we do if our doing is way past what needs to be done?

  • In the midst of the rush to get caught up choose not to miss reflecting daily on the miracle of the Word becoming flesh (John 1:14).
  • If you’ve not yet mailed your Christmas cards (I haven’t!), instead of just signing your name to a store-bought Christmas card, why not enclose a letter? Family and friends you rarely see will appreciate an update even though it’s a copy of a mass-produced letter. But more than just the “news,” ask Father how you can encourage them through sharing something He has taught you this year. Choose to be real.
  • Write a Christmas poem or story and post it on your blog.
  • Post Scripture promises to your social media pages.
  • Write a Letter to the Editor to address efforts to take Christ out of Christmas. Write an intelligent, well-informed response and avoid preaching.
  • Give books by your favorite authors to family and friends.
  • Give yourself the gift of Tyndale’s The One Year Study Bible.
  • cwmg-2017Another must-have gift for yourself – the hot-off-the-press Christian Writers MarketGuide 2017. I just received two boxes of the newly designed and much easier to use guide. Thanks, Steve Laube and Lin Johnson for your work on this needed resource. It retails for $22.99 but is available through the Write His Answer Ministries bookstore for only $17.99 plus $4.00 shipping. There is NO charge for shipping if your order for additional titles from the WHAM bookstore is $35 or more. Click here to order.
  • Plan now to make 2017 the year of growing your writing skills by saving May 17-20 for the Colorado Christian Writers Conference or July 26-29 for the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. I’m praising God for how both conferences are coming together. Be watching for an update on the websites by the end of the year. Why not drop a hint that a conference would make a wonderful Christmas gift?pc-2017-cwcs

Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son. Thank You for the promise that “His life is the light that shines through the darkness – and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:5 TLB). Help us to be bearers of His light through the words we write and lives we live.

ant-306677_640Guest post from
GPCWC Faculty member
Patricia Durgin

David and all our children are home safe and sound. Hallelujah! They came home to a house filled with an ant infestation. They’re everywhere!

In our cars (not only around them–in them), on our counter tops, in our beds, I can’t tell you how maddening it is!

We’ve tried everything we can think of, but we can’t get rid of them. It’s intolerable, but we’re stumped as to what to try next.

Life here is just one thing after another right now. Sometimes your life is like that, too, isn’t it? What shall we do?

Bringing It Home To You

When random, mysterious, wonky issues crop up out-of-the-blue, the enemy is usually behind them.

God gives us lessons to teach us, refine us, and deliver us. He’s not trying to trip us up; He wants to grow us up.

The enemy, on the other hand, wants to destroy us and if he can’t do that, he wants to make our lives miserable, so that we’ll listen to his whispers when he says, “If God really loved you, these things wouldn’t be happening to you.”

Which is, of course, a lie straight from the pit!

Thoughts To Ponder

When life is topsy-turvy (for whatever reason), that’s no time to turn our backs on God. And it’s certainly no time to think He’s turned His back on us!

We might review how we got in this mess, and if it was by following God, we can ask Him if He wants us to continue going in this direction, or if He’s ready for us to change directions.

The one thing we absolutely, positively, undeniably should NOT do is make a decision based upon our circumstances, for they waffle to and fro. They are unreliable. God is not.

Sooner or later, these pesky ants will leave our home. But the enemy will remain, trying to distract us, discourage us, and if possible, destroy us by destroying our faith.

We cannot let the enemy win! I encourage you to hold fast, and keep believing.

If God says to move, do so. But if He does not, stay right where you are and wait for Him. He is on His way!

Thanks for joining me on this journey, Patricia.

She focuses on the basics, discovering (or rediscovering) the specific people Christ wants you to serve, the unique message He wants you to communicate, and the transformation your audience can expect to receive. Then we create your professional online presence to make that happen so you can attract and serve your ideal clients around the world.

Like my clients, I have an eclectic background. For over 35 years, I trained employees in my professional life and served adult survivors of childhood abuse in my ministry life.
During those years, I delivered over 5,000 teaching sessions at work, church, and in the community, not counting the 8 years my husband David and I home-schooled our 2 daughters. We’re now empty-nesters living in Atlanta.

Faith rock“Do you believe God can use you?” I asked in my last post.

It’s a question I also ask myself on days when doubts threaten to overwhelm me. I don’t doubt Him. I know He is faithful. It’s self doubts fueled by the accusations of the accuser that I struggle to overcome.

How can I – how can you – overcome the self-doubts that hold us back from experiencing the  victory that faith brings?

1. Cut the old tapes. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 TLB).

2. Stop listening to the wrong voices. “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:4 NASB)

3. Change your focus! “Look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had” (Phil. 2:4-5 TEV).

4. Renew your vision. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18 KJV).

5. Set specific and measurable goals. “We should make plans – counting on God to help us” (Prov. 16:9 TLB).

6. Refuse to let disappointments derail you. “No one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed” (Rom. 10:11 TLB).

7. Don’t reinforce your doubts. “But I’m not the person for a job like that” (Ex. 3:11 TLB).

8. Refuse to fall victim to discouragement. “He is a mighty Savior. He will give you
victory. He will rejoice over you with great gladness; he will love you and not accuse you” (Zeph. 3:17 TLB).

9. Stop procrastinating and persist. “Dreaming instead of doing is foolishness, and there is ruin in a flood of empty words” (Eccl. 5:7 TLB)

10.Draw near to the Promise Keeper. “When you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him” (James 4:8 TLB).

11. Stay in the Word. The whole Bible “is God’s way of making us well prepared at
every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” (2 Tim. 3:17 TLB).

12. Get to work. “Be strong and courageous and get to work. Do not be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with you; he will not forsake you. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB).

13Put on the armor and commit to what He is calling you to do – NOW! “So I run
straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around” (1 Cor. 9:26 TLB).

Now you have every grace and blessing;
every spiritual gift and power
for doing his will are yours
during this time of waiting
for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:7 TLB

July 9 I gave a day long “Write His Answer” seminar in Baltimore. I quoted Chuck Colson’s sobering words in Against the Night, Living in the New Dark Ages:

‘Dark Age’ is a strong term. I recognize that. Yet in recent years I’ve had a growing sense of storm clouds gathering on the horizon . . . The forecast is foreboding . . . We  scan the horizon with unease.

We sense that things are winding down, that somehow freedom, justice, and order are slipping away. Our great civilization may not yet lie in smoldering ruins, but the enemy is within the gates.

The times seem to smell of sunset. Encroaching darkness casts long shadows across every institution in our land. . . . We do face a crisis in Western culture, and it presents the greatest threat to civilization since the barbarians invaded Rome.”

Sunset_Mountains_Worship_Background

I feel such a strong sense of urgency to “write His answer” – now. I believe the day is fast approaching when we will not have the freedom to print or distribute Christian literature or to share our faith on the Internet.

Critical days are ahead. As so many are saying, America is teetering on the edge of collapse. I urge you to watch Michael Gantt’s keynote, “The Cross Is the Main Thing,” from last year’s conference.

“The sad fact for America is that
our sin has made God our enemy.
Because of the rejection of God and His Word
and because we have exchanged
the God of Life for the gods of death
and perversion,
America is already under
the Hand of God’s judgment.

“If there is no national confession of sin
and if we cannot find a heart of repentance,
a Holy God will complete his judgment;
either by the complete annihilation
or subjugation of what was once a great
and godly people or by rendering it
completely irrelevant on the world stage.”

Michael Gantt

Father, please open our eyes to the “signs of the time” and help us to “Make the most of every chance [we] get. These are desperate times!” (Eph. 5:16 MSG).

Sunday, July 24, is the last day to register for the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference before the price increases. It is also the last day to sign up for appointments (based on availability) with up to FOUR (agents, editors, or authors from the 55 serving on this year’s faculty. You can still register after July 24 (and walk-in), but you will need to wait until you arrive at the conference to request your appointments.

But Philly is too far? It’s not the same as being there, but CDs will be available after the conference. And I’ve just posted the order form for CDs from the May Colorado Christian Writers Conference to the website. Click here. Michael Gantt’s keynote that the above quote came from was also presented in Colorado this May and received a standing ovation.

But I can’t afford the cost. If Father wants you to come, He will provide. This is not a pat answer but one that I have personally experienced time and time again. I know all about “thinking lack.”  But I also have been convicted that when I worry (translation “wring my hands”) over my perception that there is not enough money, I grieve Almighty God who promises to supply all my needs from His riches in glory (Phil. 4:19). Partial scholarships are still available. Family, friends, your church might welcome the opportunity to invest in your writing ministry, but you need to ask.

But I can’t get time off work. God can grant you favor with your boss, but again you need to ask. If you’ve used all your vacation time but are off on Saturdays, then come just one day.

But I don’t have anyone to watch my kids or aging parent. Again, you need to ask! Remember, “you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it” (James 4:2 NLT).

As my friend Lee Roddy once said, “eternity will be different” because of the words that will be written and published  as a result of this conference.

Father, please help everyone who reads these words not to doubt You or the gift of
words You have entrusted to them. Move whatever obstacles that appear to stand in their way and get them to the August 3-6, 2016, GPCWC. I know You will meet us there.

Keep believing, living, and writing His answer!

“Reconciled One to Another, Ministry in the Day of #Black Lives Matter” – Please take a minute to go to http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/spreadtheword to read this article  that ASSISTNews.net featured. I’m so glad Tracey Lewis-Giggetts contacted me several months ago about teaching this workshop that we’re also offering in Pastors Write. Tracey has just received a prestigious award and needs to be in California Friday, August 5, to receive it. So we’ve moved her “Reconciled One to Another” Pastors Write workshop to Thursday. Her Friday workshop 4G, “Reconciled,” has been switched with Jeff McDonald’s workshop 2G, “What Would God Have Us Say?” If you need to make a change, just email Barb at haleybarb@yahoo.com.

FREE concert, keynotes, and Issues workshops – If you have family and friends who live within an hour or so of Cairn University (or the church you attend is in the area), please send them to http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/FreeConcertKeynotesWorkshops. And please encourage your pastor to attend Pastors Write. It’s a great way to affirm him and the messages he brings.

Tithe your time – I want to encourage you to tithe your conference time by choosing one of the Issues workshops – your writing time, too. Even if you write fiction, issues can be incorporated into your stories. And we can all “write His answer” on social media and in blogs. It’s critical that we use the Internet while we still have the freedom to do so.

Wednesday Early Bird Workshops – Please pray about adding one or more of the Wednesday afternoon workshops to your plans. It’s a good way to ease into the conference, get settled in your room in Heritage Hall, and to receive excellent teaching in a small group setting at a reasonable price. And don’t forget the First-Timer’s Orientation at 4:00. Click here for descriptions of the 18 workshops. (We had to cancel “The Ten Most Common Writing Blunders” that Cindy Sproles was going to teach from 4:45 – 5:45 because she is not able to arrive in time. But not to worry; she is still coming!)

Picture Book Mentoring Clinic – Deadline extended to July 20. The other two clinics are full. This is a wonderful opportunity to have an author and artist team help you with your picture book. Your find the application at http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/clinics2016.

Paid critiques – I’ve also extended the deadline for emailing your manuscripts to July 20. Barb Haley, our Registrar and Appointments Coordinator, says: “The opportunity to have a trained pair of eyes look over our work, point out strengths, and offer personal ideas to improve our skills is invaluable. Many years I’ve done 3-4 paid critiques, and I know it is definitely some of the best money I have ever spent! A full half-hour of individual guided instruction and advice for just $30.” For a list of critiquers and genres click here.

Some helpful blog posts – The Internet is such an amazing resource for helpful info. I especially recommend the blogs written by the agents at www.stevelaube.com (Steve published my Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers) and www.booksandsuch.com. Wonder what makes an agent unable to say no? See http://www.booksandsuch.com/blog/im-just-agent-cant-say-no.  Or what’s wrong with your book? See http://www.stevelaube.com/whats-wrong-book.

Father, thank You for meeting us at our point of need as we prepare for the conference. Replace any anxiety with holy anticipation of what You will do.

Reconciled One to Another, Ministry
in the Age of
#Black Lives Matter

By Marlene Bagnull, Litt.D., Director, Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference, Special to ASSIST News Service

LANGHORNE, PA (ANS – July 9, 2016)
 — With the breaking news of more bloodshed on our streets, this time in Dallas where five police officers were killed, two workshops at the August 3-6 Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference take on added urgency.

On Thursday, August 4, Tracey M. Lewis-Giggetts will present a workshop specifically designed for pastors although all are welcome to attend. In “Reconciled One to Another – Ministry in the Age of #BlackLivesMatter” she will show how “the Body of Christ is most effective when all its parts are at its maximum potential.

As a result, we should be the greatest advocate for cultural and racial diversity and reconciliation in all of society. In the age of social media and digital publication, it is increasingly becoming the responsibility of the church to voice its role in social justice and political issues and to do so in a way that doesn’t compromise the Gospel but actively inserts a Christ-centric perspective into the global conversation.

This workshop will equip pastors and ministers with the necessary practical and spiritual tools to appropriately and effectively extend both their evangelism and ministry efforts beyond conventional boundaries – particularly as it relates to the intersectional issues of race and faith.”

Thursday afternoon Lewis-Giggetts will present a second workshop, “Reconciled,” that will focus on how to give voice to the Church’s role in social justice and political issues in a way that doesn’t compromise the Gospel but actively inserts a Christ-centric perspective into the global conversation.

Author and educator Lewis-Giggetts is the author of nine books including The Integrated Church: Strategies for Multicultural Ministry (Beacon Hill). Additionally, her writing on race and faith has been published in local, regional, and national print and online publications such as The GuardianUrbanFaith.comThe Chronicle for Higher EducationEbony.comMinistry MattersTheRoot.com, and more.

The Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference (GPCWC), now in its 33rd year of ministry, was one of the first Christian writers’ conferences to make it a priority to include a number of Black authors and editors on faculty. Yolanda Powell, author of Soul Food & Living Water: Spiritual Nourishment and Practical Help for the Black Family, says the conference is, “A not-to-miss gathering where writers and editors from multicultural and diverse backgrounds converge and connect in Christ.”

The theme of the conference, from Habakkuk 2:2, is “Write His Answer.” Through keynote addresses participants will be encouraged to “Transform Our Culture” by Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and chairman of The Christian Film & Television Commission (TM), and to discover how “prayer can move your author mountains and heal your life’s divides” by award-winning author Patricia Raybon. Other keynotes include “Be Prepared – Living and Writing His Answer in the Last Days,” “Guarding the Treasure,” “A Writer’s Dream,” “Write His Answer Right,” and “How Then Should We Live.”

A faculty of 55 authors, editors, and agents will teach 8 continuing sessions and 61 workshops including 6 workshops in the “Issues” track where participants will consider “America at the Crossroads,” “The Cross Is the Main Thing,” “What Would God Have Us Say,” “Stereotyping,” “Stand for Truth,” and “Reconciled.”

The conference is held on the campus of Cairn University in Langhorne, PA. For more information, please go to: http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com.

2 elephants

Are you facing an elephant?
More than likely your elephant, same as mine, is something you’ve been putting off doing because it’s just seems so big, so beyond your capability, so overwhelming . . .

You’d think after 33 years of directing the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference and 20 years directing the Colorado Christian Writers Conference it would be less overwhelming.

Not so!

Each year the task seems more daunting. And each year I have to remind myself that “God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn; he will never go back on his promises” (Rom. 11:29 TLB).

What has He promised you and me?

That it would be easy to follow Him? No. But He has promised always to be with us.

I’ve learned (but need to keep re-learning) that “when I am weak, then I am strong—the less I have, the more I depend on him” (2 Cor. 12:10 TLB).

And so, depending on Him, I keep on keeping on even though it seems that for every item I cross off my to-do list I add half a dozen more.

I’m choosing to depend on His enabling power for the day-long writers’ seminar I’m teaching in Baltimore this Saturday, July 9. I’ve given over 50 seminars and love teaching. Still, I find the preparation overwhelming. So, of course, I put it off until the last minute.

I’m reminded of a Scripture He brought to my attention many years ago when I was struggling to finish my first book.

“I want to suggest that you finish what you started to do”
(2 Cor. 8:10 TLB).

So, no more excuses! I know that in His strength  I can eat the elephant a bite at a time!

What about you?

elephant cookie

If your elephant is fear that your writing isn’t good enough to be published, then take advantage of the learning opportunities at the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. Partial scholarships are still available. Remember, God can make possible what seems impossible.

If you are registered for the conference and your “elephant” is fear that you won’t be accepted in the clinic you would really like to take, I want to encourage you to eat that elephant and complete the application. It’s due tomorrow, but I am extending the deadline until Monday morning, July 11.

Father, help us to step out of our comfort zone into the exciting plans You have for us if we will just keep our eyes on Jesus and not on the elephants!

  1. To learn the craft of writing. – See yesterday’s blog post.

    Speaking of learning, if anyone can volunteer some time to help me with WordPress formatting, it would be much appreciated. I finally found a way to add needed space between paragraphs, but now I’ve got indents that are not in the HTML code. Maybe they will draw more attention to this post. 🙂

    1. To learn the craft of marketing your work to potential publishers. If you’ve gotten more than your share of rejection slips or have yet to get your first rejection (I’m sorry, it goes with the territory of being a writer), GPCWC’s “Get Published” track of six hour-long workshops will provide practical help.

* Publishing for African American Christians
* Children’s Book Proposals
* Digital Publishing
* Who is Really in Your Audience?
* Book Proposals: The Front End Method
* Care and Feeding of an Agent

  1. Face-to-face opportunities to pitch your work to editors and agents. At GPCWC you get FOUR 15-minute one-on-one appointments with the faculty of your choice if you register for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; THREE if you come two days; TWO if you come one day. If you register before July 2, you’ll receive one more free appointment. Check out our helpful charts of editorial needs, areas of expertise, and availability for paid critiques as well as the faculty bios.Sample page editorial needs chart
  1. To learn the craft of marketing/promoting your published work. And yes, it’s a craft, and not one that comes naturally to most writers. I’ve often said that the reason I quit Girl Scouts is because of the stress of trying to sell cookies. Whether or not you like marketing, the fact is that you hold the key to the sales of your book. But the good news is that it’s a craft that can be learned. In addition to the continuing session, “Convert Your Passion to a Platform,” these workshops will provide practical and specific help.

* Creative Marketing Plans
* Sell More Books
* Shouting in a Windstorm
* Using Goodreads for Book Promo
* Working Smarter with Social Media
* Rx for Stalled Book Sales

  1. Friendships with other writers. My closest friends are writers I’ve met at writers’ conferences. In amazing ways writers connect deeply with one another more quickly than I ever have in the chit-chat before and after Sunday morning worship services. And we need each other. A key verse for me that I’ve experienced and sought to follow is 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Encourage each other to build each other up” (TLB).
    1. To expand your vision. Our  keynotes will inspire and challenge you.

* Transforming Our Culture
* Be Prepared – Living & Writing His Answer in the Last Days
* Guarding the Treasure
* A Writer’s Dream
* Moving Our Mountains
* Write His Answer Right
* How Then Should We Live?

    1. Direction from the Lord. Each year, and this is my 33rd year directing GPCWC, God meets us and changes lives. He has a plan for you and for your writing. He is the One who makes the impossible possible.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity

So here are seven reasons you need to prayerfully consider coming to the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. I could easily list many more!

Partial scholarships are still available if you need financial help to come that your family, friends, or church are unable to provide. Housing is available on the campus of Cairn University, and we’ll do roommate matching to lower the cost.

Speaking of cost, if you register through July 1, you’ll save $5 to $20 on the registration fee.

There’s lots more info on our website and in our 16-page brochure. Still have questions? You’re welcome to email me at mbagnull@aol.com or call 484-991-8581.

Why you need to come?

Reason # 1 – To learn the craft of writing.

Okay, maybe you’ve been writing for many years, but there is always more to learn. In addition to 61 hour-long workshops, GPCWC 2016 offers eight continuing sessions.

Writing a novel but feeling stuck? Forget the muddled middle. You can’t even get to the inciting incident. Rachel Hauck, New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author will provide needed building blocks in “The Story Equation.” This is a great class for beginners or advanced writers, published or not-yet-published, pantsers of plotters.

Are you hoping to one day see your story on the big screen? Dr. Ted Baehr’s “Breakthrough Scriptwriting” will teach you how to write a script that is structurally sound, entertaining, morally responsible, and very marketable. Ted is the founder and chairman of The Christian Film and Television Commission™. God is using him to make a difference in Hollywood.

Do you long to share your life story? Award-winning memorist, Patricia Raybon, will teach “Master the Memoir.” She is the author of the prayer memoir, I Told the Mountain to Move, and Undivided: A Muslim Daughter, Her Christian Mother, Their Path to Peace.

Do you know you need to strengthen your writing skills? Then you need Susan King’s crash course, “It’s All About Style.” Susan has been with The Upper Room magazine for over 20 years while at the same time teaching English at Lipscomb University.

Are you just getting started? Bob Hostetler’s “First Writes” will cover the basics of preparing and writing for publication.You’ll learn the best ways to break in and how to write for and sell to magazines.

Do you have a book idea but now what? In “From Proposal to Print” Sharon Norris Elliott will show you how to transform your vision into reality. You can expect to receive individual coaching on your project from this 25-year veteran. You’ll leave with both a great kick-start and a defined goal to get your book completed and into the hands of a publisher.

How do you reach more people with the message God has placed on your heart? Dr. Harold Arnold Jr., founder of The Pursuit of Influence, and SEO expert, Megan Breedlove, will teach you how to “Convert Your Passion to a Platform.”

Are you considering going indie? Amy Deardon’s hands-on sessions will walk you through the self-publishing process.You’ll learn how to design and market your book while keeping your costs low. Amy is an award-winning author, publisher, and budding online entrepreneur who is eager to guide you through the self-publishing minefield.

Plus choose 6 workshops from 42 offered and 3 Wednesday early bird workshops from 19 offered! WOW!

I hope you’ll be back tomorrow for more of the seven reasons why you need to come to the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference.

There’s still time to beat the July 2 price increase and to request your free one-on-one appointments with our faculty. BONUS: Register through July 1 and you’ll receive one more free 15-minute appointment with the faculty member of your choice. That’s a total of five appointments if you register for Thursday through Saturday! But don’t delay. Appointments are booked on a first-come basis.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity
Does your schedule or finances make it seem impossible to come? Trust God to make a way. Nothing is too difficult for Him.
