Marti Pieper

As a little girl, I excelled in school. Even before I was old enough to earn A’s, I received E’s (for “Excellent.”)

But there was one area in which I didn’t excel. Look at my second-grade class picture, and you’ll find me on the front row: cat’s-eye glasses, red cheeks, and clasped hands.

I donned my first pair of glasses earlier that school year. But the red cheeks and clasped hands? Those appeared a few minutes before the photo shoot, when two of my classmates told me I pressed too hard when I colored.

The problem (and subsequent sobs) came not because I thought I was a great artist, but because I wanted to do everything right. Hence the tears and red cheeks. Hence the soggy tissue stuffed between those clasped hands. Hence the consistent report- card comments: “Does not receive criticism well.” “Needs to work on responses to criticism.”

My teachers could well have said, “Needs to develop rhino skin.” These ponderous mammals have skin more than ten times as thick as the human epidermis. We’re talking tough!

So yes, I needed to develop thicker skin. I needed to understand that not everyone would like what I drew (or wrote). And I needed to gain the strength to persevere no matter what.

Today, I believe that my tender heart is a God-given quality, part of what makes me a good writer and intercessor. But if I’m not careful, my sensitivity can also drag me down, leaving me stunned and silent after a negative review or trembling after a harsh conference critique. And, if I’m not careful, it can block my desire to improve my work.

At the Colorado Christian Writers Conference, in a special Early Bird workshop on Wednesday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m., I’ll teach about “Rhino Skin: Why We Need It and How to Get It.” I’ll share how I moved from the tearful second-grader to the writer who has no more fear in giving or receiving critiques of her own. And I’ll teach how you can grow that tougher skin, too.

Unless you’re a zoologist, you probably don’t care about the thickness of a rhino’s skin. But as a writer, you should care a lot about the thickness of your own. Join me (it’s not too late to register for the conference) and we’ll learn together.

P.S. If you missed my tongue-in-cheek poem about Sam-I-Am and the CCWC, check it out here. Enjoy!

Marti also will teach workshop 6F, “Blogging Success,” at the May 13-16 Colorado Christian Writers Conference for Rick Marschall who is unable to be with us. At the July 29 – August 1 Greater Philly Conference she is teaching a continuing session on “Master the Memoir.” In addition, along with Ava Pennington, she will serve at the appointment desk at both conferences. Thank You, Father, for the faculty You have provided for both conferences and for all You are doing and will do.

Think Big!

Think Big3

Saturday I had the joy of keynoting at the Stay Focused Writers’ Retreat in New Jersey. The theme of the retreat was “Think Big” based on Dr. Ben Carson’s book, Think Big, written with by good friend, Cec Murphey. I highly recommend this book and Gifted Hands, also written with Cec, and the movie, Gifted Hands.

I began my message with this powerful promise:

Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. – Ephesians 3:20 TLB

In my keynote I identified a baker’s dozen attitudes and actions that block us from believing God’s promises.

1. Cut the old tapes. – “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 TLB).

2. Stop listening to the wrong voices. – “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:4 NASB)

3. Change your focus! – “Look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had” (Phil. 2:4-5 TEV).

4. Lack of vision. – “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18 KJV).

5. Set specific and measurable goals. “We should make plans – counting on God to help us” (Prov. 16:9 TLB).

6. Refuse to let disappointments derail you. “No one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed” (Rom. 10:11 TLB).

7. Don’t sink in the sea of doubts. – “But I’m not the person for a job like that” (Ex. 3:11 TLB).

8. Refuse to fall victim to discouragement. – “He is a mighty Savior. He will give you victory. He will rejoice over you with great gladness; he will love you and not accuse you” (Zeph. 3:17 TLB).

9. Stop procrastinating and persist. – “Dreaming instead of doing is foolishness, and there is ruin in a flood of empty words” (Eccl. 5:7 TLB)

10. Draw near to the Promise Giver and Keeper. – “When you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him” (James 4:8 TLB).

11. Stay in the Word. – The whole Bible “is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” (2 Tim. 3:17 TLB).

12. Get to work. – “Be strong and courageous and get to work. Do not be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with you; he will not forsake you. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB).

Run13. Put on the armor and commit to what He is calling you to do – NOW! – “So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around” (1 Cor. 9:26 TLB).

Now you have every grace and blessing;
every spiritual gift and power
for doing his will are yours
during this time of waiting
for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:7 TLB

Guest post by

Becky Danielson, M.Ed.

We sat in the workshop, intently listening to Cecil Murphy list the attributes of a successful book proposal. Writing fast and furiously we recorded his suggestions. By the time there was a break, we had pages of notes. As other class participants ran for a quick cup of coffee, we reviewed our scribblings. We looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Our current proposal needed to be revised. A major overhaul would be a better description. We had done practically everything wrong, from font to a three-hole-punch notebook. Our laughter caught Cecil’s attention.  After hearing the reason for the chuckles, he asked if he could use our proposal as an example of what not to do.

That was our first Colorado Christian Writers Conference. We followed Cecil’s instructions and sent off our revised proposal. Three months later we signed a book contract. Cecil, Marlene, and the other pros we met all played a part in us getting our first book, Empowered Parents: Putting Faith First, into print. When we felt the Lord calling us to writing another book, we returned to the Colorado Christian Writers Conference.

We’ve honed our skills and expanded our ministry. We’ve acquired the knowledge on how to advance our writing careers, tackle social media, and market effectively. The 1 CORINTHIANS 13 PARENT SERIES: Raising Little Kids with Big Love and Raising Big Kids with Supernatural Love is our latest endeavor. Both books plus their study guides have recently been published.

We have attended as novice writers and as a bit more seasoned professionals. The conference is always fresh and new; with something for the experienced author and offerings for the novice writer. Each keynote, panel discussion, and breakout session targets the varied aspects of writing, publishing, and speaking. We can directly link our success to the CCWC.

Marlene and her staff encourage and guide with faithfulness so the participants of the conference can be equipped and inspired to “Write His Answer” in order to bring others to Christ.

The setting is the added bonus to the conference. When you attend be sure to plan in some time to hike one of the many mountain trails available in Estes Park. You will be blessed by the nature that surrounds you and the nurture of the staff at the CWC.

Breck01-crop, vertSunday Morning Guide-Led Mountain Hike
May 17 after Colorado Christian Writers Conference

Welcome to Colorado everyone! So, after looking out at those amazing mountains all week long, come Sunday we all get our chance to go see them up close. But maybe you’re looking for something more active than just driving through the scenery? Well do we have an opportunity for you.

My name’s Eric and I’m looking to take a small group on a Guide-Led hike from the Bear Lake Trailhead up an extremely scenic and relatively easy 1.1 mile trail to Dream Lake, one the most photo- graphed lakes in the entire Park.

This activity will take approx. 3 hours and guarantees spectacular views that will stay with you long, long after the conference. And yes, because the altitude will leave you as breathless as the views, this activity will be limited to active attendees with good cardio-
fitness, sorry.

Questions? I’m attending the conference just like you – stop and ask me anything!

In the end, you’ll stretch your legs, breath a little harder, slide on some snow, and still be done in time to make your 5:00pm flight out of DIA, filled with memories, and more than a few photos, that you can share and marvel over for years.

Date: Sunday, May 17thCCWC hike photo 2

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate (due to altitude
and one steeper section)

Distance: Approx. 2.25 miles, out-and-back

Elevation: 9,475 to 9,910ft

Group Size: 6-8 Pref, 10 Max

Time requirement: Please plan on approx. 3 hours for this activity, plus an added 30 min drive to the trailhead from the Conference area, depending on traffic. Return times are flexible depending on “stop for photo” needs.

Equipment: You will want sturdy shoes/boots for hiking, and layered clothing for wind and possible chilly temps. Please plan to bring lunch/snacks and water too. (If you’re staying in Longs Peak or Alpen Saturday night, the YMCA provides a free box lunch.) Add a camera & sunscreen/hat and you’re all set.

Over Sunny Cyprus?

Guest blog by Cindy Watkins
CCWC & GPCWC
Registration / Housing Coordinator & More

Three weeks into my three-month mission trip to Cyprus last fall, I didn’t want to go home. I was involved in one of the most important ministries of my missionary career. I was making such a huge difference on every front: the administration work, the boys and girls football ministry (soccer), the bond of family with the two missionary families, the prayer team for the rescue & restore from human trafficking ministry, and the life of the local church we attended. The blessings from what God was doing through and for me far outweighed the difficult living conditions and the strain on my health.

Cyprus

We began the process to extend my stay to at least six months. I even told my children and grandchildren that I wouldn’t be home for Christmas. This was serious for me to spend the holiday on the other side of the world from family. Actually, I could stay forever on that little island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. I’d still be there.

But in the end, God closed the door for long-term in Cyprus. Why would God pull me away from near heaven in ministry, fellowship and family? Four words: Marlene Bagnull and you!!!!

Cindy WatkinsMy first missionary calling is to spend three months of the year—every year—sitting at Marlene’s dining room table working away at whatever she needs and sitting at the Registration Table at two conferences taking care of the conferees, faculty and staff.

God sends me off to the ends of the earth to take His message of love and hope to the least, the last, the lost in every nation, but He always brings me home. Home to whatever Write His Answer Ministries needs me to do. The joy of obedience overcomes the cost of my missionary ventures at age 70 whether in PA, CO or anywhere in the world God sends me.

Empty tomb

Darkness Shattered

They had believed he was the Messiah.
Leaving everything behind,
they followed him.
The Kingdom of God
had seemed so real, so near.
He healed the sick,
fed the hungry,
calmed the storm at sea –
and in their hearts.
His words had given them life
and hope and purpose.
But now he was dead.
How could they have been
so mistaken, so misled?

Hiding in the room
where he had broken the bread
and passed the cup,
hopelessness and despair
closed in around them.
They laughed –
a cold, hard, bitter laugh –
when Mary said she had seen him.
People didn’t come back to life
after dying on a cross.

Suddenly the darkness shattered
at the sound of the familiar voice.
“Peace be with you.”
Jesus stood before them
not dead – but alive!
Light filled the room
and the darkness in their hearts.
Everything he had taught them was true.
He was and is and shall be
alive – forevermore!
Christ is risen.
He is risen, indeed!

Before a book hits the shelves we need to plan ways to reach people with its message to generate excitement. That means marketing. One of the best ways to develop a plan is to see what others have done.

Take a little journey with me on ways I promoted Nature Girl: a guide to caring for God’s creation.

I needed a good pitch and to know my reason for writing the book and why it can make a difference in lives of girls. My life and Romans 1:20 sparked the idea. I grew up in dairy farm country in Connecticut and married a Coast Guard officer that meant living near waterways around the country, including Hawaii. That gave me a great passion for this land and God’s creation. The words of Romans 1:20 remind us that creation is a witness to the existence of God. Nature reveals his power and divine nature. So, if we care for the earth we help preserve that witness. That’s a powerful thought. So, I want girls to develop a passion for nature and for preserving the witness of God’s existence in fun ways.

My daughter (co-author) and I brainstormed ideas. We made a list and started working on them.
naturegirlcover

    • We started with creating an acrostic of the words Nature Girl to reflect the fun and significant contents. Our publisher put it on a bookmark (http://tinyurl.com/nwo4s6y).
    • We created a pitch for media: Nature and fun go together. When we work to preserve the earth we also preserve the witness of God (Romans 1:20). The book presents a balanced view to motivate girls to care about nature from a biblical perspective and get girls to hang outdoors instead of in malls. Activities help girls explore the earth through experiments, earth care projects, crafts, scriptures, quizzes, and other activities while exploring nature, energy, critters, and more.
    • To connect to teens we wrote an article for Sisterhood magazine that was published the month of the book’s release.
    • We partnered with American Heritage Girls on creating materials to coordinate with their environment badge. This included ten pages in their leader magazine with ideas on holding one-day seminars to earn the badge and explore nature.
    • Speaking is important too, so I applied to speak at the American Heritage Girl leadership conference where I sold many copies.
  • I started writing for Molly Green magazine and wrote some articles to promote the book plus created some blog posts for it.

This is only part of the list. We also did more than a dozen radio shows, a number of TV shows, and a blog tour. We are connecting with a TV station now to be regular guests on topics related to the book. The publisher helped too, including flying us to Texas to sign books at the Texas Library Association convention, helping us with media, and providing books to sign for retailers at events.

One review can be found at http://bit.ly/1lG4LGw and links to others are on my website.

One radio interview is at http://www.shepherdshillacademy.org/blogs/traceembry/tag/nature-girl.

So, start your own brainstorming with where to pitch article ideas and media appearances, bookmarks that engage the audience, speaking ideas, etc.

What to learn more — come  listen to Karen at the Lancaster Writer’s Super Saturday on April 11th. Check http://lancasterchristianwriterstoday.blogspot.com/ for details.

Sign up for appointments with Karen at the May 13-16 Colorado and July 29 – August 1 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference www.writehisanswer.com She’ll be doing a special marketing clinic at the Philly conference.

Choices

 Choices

Arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane,
You could have called on heaven’s armies;
yet You allowed them to take You captive.

Falsely accused in a mockery of a trial,
You could have denied who You were;
yet You convicted Yourself.

Physically and emotionally abused,
You could have struck down Your tormenters;
yet You remained silent and turned the other cheek.

On the way to the cross,
You could have thought only of Yourself;
yet You spoke with compassion to Jerusalem’s daughters.

Nailed to the cross and spit upon by the crowd,
You could have cursed Your enemies;
instead You prayed, “Father, forgive them.”

Taunted to “come down from the cross!”
You could have done exactly that;
yet You chose to suffer and die
that I might have the choice to live in You.

flowers-purple-crocus-13111088Spring is coming!

Actually, it arrived a week ago, but you can’t tell it from the cold the past few days.

I am so ready for spring – so ready to work in my garden. Even when it does warm up (really, it will;I KNOW it will), until the ground dries out from the winter snows, I’ll sink in above my sneakers.

Truth is, I don’t like waiting. And so Father called me to be a writer, a profession where waiting is a given!

Many of you know that my first book was rejected (returned sounds better!) by 42 publishers over a six-year period.

“I want you to learn to wait patiently, productively, and expectantly,” the Lord told me one day when I was griping and feeling sorry for myself.

I pondered those words the rest of the day. The productive and expectant part sounded okay. But patience? Surely the Lord knew I had a problem being patient. Yet I knew if I failed to learn the lesson of patience, I wouldn’t be prepared to persist during other dry spells. The challenge Lee Roddy once gave me, “write so heaven will be different,” would never happen if my lack of patience caused me to quit.

If I chose to use waiting times to indulge in self-pity and gripe to other writers about “those editors,” time that could be used productively would be lost. And the bottom line . . . failing to learn to wait patiently and expectantly would be the denial of a Scripture I promised years ago to heed. “I will keep on expecting you to help me. I [will] praise you more and more. I [will] walk in the strength of the Lord God” (Ps. 71:14, 16)—through the times when my writing is bearing fruit, as well as through the times when I must wait for it to mature and ripen.

spring-flowers

Are you stuck in a time of waiting? Does your writing ministry seem to be on hold? Ask the Lord, “What lessons are You trying to teach me?” I’d love for you to share what He shows you.

Scriptures to encourage you: Psalm 27:14; 32:8; 42:11; 130:3-6; Isaiah 40:29-31; Hebrews 11:1.

Our four hands-on clinics are a great way to get the help you need and to connect with a small group of writers that may become forever friends.  Applications (click here) are due April 1 for:

Fiction Intensive with Tracie & Jim Peterson – limit 8 participants
What makes a good story? How do you give life to paper characters? Why is setting so critical? What’s research got to do with fiction? How can you avoid mistakes like telling not showing, too much backstory, flashbacks within flashbacks, lack of motivation in your characters, and more. In addition to the application, you need to submit 15 pages.

Nonfiction Book Proposals with Cindy Lambert – limit 6 participants
Cindy will lead a group of six authors in critiquing one another’s proposals, then spend the conference improving and fine-tuning them. She will also have a one-on-one 30-minute appointment with each participant.

Get Them Coming to Your Blog/Website with Megan Breedlove – limit 10 participants
How do you bring the maximum number of people to your site so they can hear your message or receive your ministry?  Learn what kind of web presence you need and where to go to get it, determine exactly who your target audience is and what they need, receive individual instruction to ensure your site does the best possible job of meeting your audience’s needs, discover how to promote your site and increase your Google ranking, expand your author platform so you can get your message out to the nations and develop a presence that will be attractive to publishers, and more.

fear-of-public-speaking-1

Speakers’ Clinic with Roy Hanschke
limit 8 participants
Every writer needs to be a speaker, too. If you’ve been avoiding the challenge to begin the speaking part of your ministry or need to improve what you’re already doing, this is the clinic for you. Roy will help you 1) discover your ministry focus and how to talk about it (power statements), 2) organize one of your talks to maximize time and effectiveness (message development), 3) present your talk with power and pizzazz (voice personality), and 4) market your message through radio (media mania). You’ll have an opportunity to test what you learn and receive helpful evaluation from Roy and your peers.

It’s often said that writing and speaking go hand in hand.
That’s why I’m grateful that CCWC  offered Roy’s Speakers’ Clinic.
Roy is a dynamic example of “show don’t tell”
as he actually demonstrates different methods of effective communication.
Each participant had the opportunity to try out Roy’s suggestions
in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.
We learned from each other
and went home with a notebook full of useful instructions
on how to become a more skillful communicator.

Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference – July 29 – August 1

Yes, I know it’s been a long wait, but finally the faculty and continuing sessions are in place. I’m really excited at how I see Father at work. Now I need to work at getting the rest of the website updated and  the brochure to the printer. Online registration opens April 1. No fooling!

Discouraged faceLast week I confessed my struggle with procrastination.

What about you? Isn’t it easier to stay in the comfort zone of thinking, talking, even praying about something you feel called to do (or to write) than to actually get started, much less finish? Isn’t it safer to put things off to “someday” than to risk failure?

Let’s be honest. Isn’t it really F E A R that holds us back? Fear of not being able to finish what we start … Fear of not having what it takes – of not measuring up to what others expect … Fear of rejection … Fear of failure …

Years ago, as I struggled to finish my first book, my writing papa, Lee Roddy, asked me whose voice I was listening to. He knew – I really did, too – that I was listening to the voice of fear not faith.

I’m so grateful for the many reassurances God gives me in His Word.

Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed.
I am your God. I will strengthen you;
I will help you; I will uphold you
with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 41:0 TLB

And I’m grateful for the lesson of the elk.

beautifull elk

These magnificent creatures fearlessly roam the grounds of the YMCA of the Rockies and downtown Estes Park. The bulls weigh an average of over 700 pounds. Their antlers stretch close to 4 feet high and weigh around 40 pounds each. And yet, as Father, pointed out to me, they hold their head high as they charge across the fields and scale boulders.

I’ve never forgotten what He said to me one day when I was more overwhelmed than usual with everything I needed to do and fearful I’d never meet the deadlines that could not be extended. “Child,” He said, “the load is not too heavy when you are doing what I created you to do.”

Father, thank You for how You’ve reassured me that what You call me to do, You will also equip me to do. Help me to choose to walk (and run) in faith and not fear.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run [like the elk] and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 TLB
