The Accuser

Jesus on the cross

The Accuser

He had returned,
not that he had ever left—
the voice of the accuser
becoming louder and louder.

The plan will never work.
They’re not strong enough.
Face it.
You’ve failed!
You know one is going to betray you.
Another will deny you.
And they are all going to run away.
Listen!
They still don’t even know
who you are.

Anyone who has seen me
has seen the Father.
Just believe it!

You’ve seen crucifixions—
men raising themselves up
on nails pounded through their feet.
Gasping for breath.
Going insane with the pain.
Is that really how you want to die?
How can your father ask you,
his only son,
to die on a cross?
And how can you know
your death will save anyone?
Men will laugh at the cross,
not be drawn to it.
You’re a fool!

Father, not my will, but yours!
Help me embrace the cross
for the joy that is set before me.
This is the way—the only way
to bring men back to you.
And they are worth it!

reflections on Christ - crucifixion

I gained a new understanding of what Jesus felt when the crown of thorns was shoved on his head when I fell into a rose bush. Leaning over too far and stretching awkwardly as I tried to pound in a fertilizer stick, I lost my balance and fell head first into one of the thorniest rose bushes in my garden. It’s really amazing that I wasn’t seriously hurt. Thank You, Father! And thank You, Jesus, for enduring the thorns and the lashing and the cross.  The strength of Your will, Your commitment to do what Your Father asked, and especially Your love for mankind even as they mocked You amazes me. “What wondrous love is this . . .”

Updates – August 3-6
Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference

Plans are almost finalized for another exciting and life-changing conference. Monday morning, Lord willing, I plan to begin updating the website for our 33rd year of ministry. Here’s a preview of just one of our eight continuing sessions:

Ted Baehr

Dr. Ted Baehr
Founder and Chairman
The Christian Film and Television Commission
Publisher of MOVIEGUIDE Magazine

Ted is an award-winning media authority often on television, radio, and in print. His purpose is to be used by God to redeem the values of the mass media and encourage famlies to use wisdom in selecting entertainment. His books include The Media-Wise Family and The Culture-Wise Family.

Ted will give a keynote message on “Transforming Our Culture” and teach a continuing session on “Breakthrough Scriptwriting.” You’ll learn how to write a script that is structurally sound, entertaining, morally responsible, and very marketable. Ted will show you how to go from treatment to theatrical release so you can get the Word out through the mass media of entertainment. He also includes valuable information about key principles of communicating through movies and television from a Christian perspective.

Blessed Is He!

Hosanna

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
The crowd cheered and sang praises.
They waved palm branches.
and threw their cloaks before Him.
But Jesus was solemn as He traveled that road –
that road to the cross.

As God incarnate He knew all that was to come.
He saw not just His own death on the cross,
but the persecution of His followers
and the destruction of Jerusalem.
He saw nation rising against nation –
the madness of yet-to-be-born rulers.
And Jesus wept.

He would be wounded and bruised for our sins,
chastised that we might have peace,
lashed that we might be healed;
yet few would accept His gift of life.
The darkness of evil would continue to reign,
but the light of His love
would not be extinguished.

Entrusted to us,
His light will grow brighter.
A cloud of witnesses are cheering us on,
to daily take up our own cross
and follow Him closely.

Blessed is He who is coming – again!

Yes, I believe He is coming soon.

In one of my workshops at the Evangelical Press Association Convention April 6-8 in Lancaster, PA, I plan to quote Chuck Colson’s sobering words in Against the Night, Living in the New Dark Ages.

’Dark Age’ is a strong term. I recognize that. Yet in recent years I’ve had a growing sense of storm clouds gathering on the horizon . . .  The forecast is foreboding . . . We scan the horizon with unease.

“We sense that things are winding down, that somehow freedom, justice, and order are slipping away. Our great civilization may not yet lie in smoldering ruins, but the enemy is within the gates.

“The times seem to smell of sunset. Encroaching darkness casts long shadows across every institution in our land. . . . We do face a crisis in Western culture, and it presents the greatest threat to civilization since the barbarians invaded Rome.”

I feel such a strong sense of urgency to “write His answer” – now. I believe the day is fast approaching when we will not have the freedom to print or distribute Christian literature or to share our faith on the Internet. Father, please open our eyes to the “signs of the time” and help us to “Make the most of every chance [we] get. These are desperate times!” (Eph. 5:16 MSG).

Michael Gantt, a pastor from Vermont who keynoted some years back at both the Colorado and the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference and who is keynoting again at this year’s conferences, said something I’ve never forgotten. “It is very critical that you believe what God has to say is relevant to this generation. It is very critical that you believe, that you believe, that God will use you to bring His message to the world.” Please take 3.5 minutes to view the video at http://youtu.be/-qfhH5NH7XE.

Registration is open for the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference. The next 7 people who register online and mention this blog post/email in the Comments will receive a free copy of my book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers.

Father, please help everyone who reads these words not to doubt You or the gift of words You have entrusted to them. Move mountains to get them to the mountain in Colorado May 11-14. I know You will meet us there.

Jesus riding into Jerusalem

Just as Jesus wept over Jerusalem, I believe he weeps over our cities. And I believe He will also meet us at the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. Plans are underway. I am praising Him for all He is doing and will do.

two plus threehated math in school.

I remember sitting at the dining room table when I was in elementary school struggling to figure out my math homework. The harder I tried, the more frustrated I became. Invariably I’d end up sobbing. Sadly, my father didn’t help. Instead he accused me of not trying.

In high school  math became even more difficult. My mind simply couldn’t wrap around alegbraic formulas. I passed, but just barely.

Truth is, I still hate math today. I’ve never viewed numbers as friends. Perhaps that’s why I became a writer!

calculator and coinsStill numbers are something I live with daily. And it’s not just math problems that frustrate me. Gratefully God provided calculators for that task. As long as I hit the right keys, they are much more accurate than I am.

Often I become frustrated because the numbers just aren’t there. Sometimes numbers represent dollars and cents. I forget to thank God for all He has provided and instead begin thinking lack.

There’s also the danger numbers present when I’m tempted to compare my book sales with that of other writers. I forget that God’s measure for success is not the same as mine.

But the biggest way I allow numbers to defeat me is by leaving God out of the equation. When I focus on the problem and how inadequate I feel to resolve it, I miss the joy of exchanging my weakness for His strength.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And PositivityToday, no matter how overwhelmed you or I may feel because of a problem that seems unsolvable, we can choose to believe His promise.

“Everything is possible with God.”

Doors

wooden-door-408386_640

Doors!

Are they open or closed?

As many of you know, the first book I wrote was “returned” (that’s a kinder word than “rejected”) 42 times over a five-year period. Finally, at the St. David’s Christian Writers Conference the 43rd editor expressed interest. A little over two months later, I signed a contract.

But what if I had not persevered? What if I had concluded that God  obviously must not have called me to write? What if I had given up?

  • Eight other books would never have been written or published.
  • I would have never known the joy of serving on the faculty of over 70 Christian writers conferences or giving my one- and two-day Write His Answer Seminars over 50 times across the United States.
  • The Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference that I founded would not be in its 33rd year of ministry.
  • I would not have had the opportunity to begin directing the Colorado Christian Writers Conference 20 years ago.

I will always be grateful to my pastor who urged me to go to the St. David’s Christian Writers Conference. He answered my objection that we couldn’t afford it by paying my way. Friends stepped in to  take care of my two children. And the rest, as they say, “is history.”

But this is not about me; it’s about our amazing God who promises:

His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. ~ Ephesians 3:20 TLB

It’s about how He enables me to do what I could never do in my own strength. It’s about how He continues to transform my self-doubts and fear that I won’t measure up (after all, I’m only a high school graduate) into a dependence on Him.

This is my work, and I can do it only because Christ’s mighty energy is at work within me. ~ Colossians 1:29 TLB

So, what about you? If doors appear to be closed, or worse still you feel they have been slammed in your face, will you give Him your discouragement? Will you choose to trust Him? Will you listen to His still, small voice rather than the loud accusations of the evil one that you’re not good enough, smart enough, gifted enough . . . ?

Will you keep on keeping on in His strength for His glory?

I’m trusting Father will help me finalize the faculty for the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference and to begin posting info on the website that my friends at Celebration Web Design / SKWD Associates have redesigned to display on mobile devices. They will again be offering a discounted price at both conferences. I am so, so grateful for their expertise and ministry heart.

And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up. Galatians 6:9 TLB

Market Research

Discouraged face

Writing, rewriting, editing . . . It’s not easy to refine an idea into a publishable manuscript. And that is just the beginning! Then you need to determine  where to submit your writing and to persist in submitting again and again. It may become evident through this process that independent publishing is your best option. But how can you be certain?

Going to a writers’ conference will not only help you to gain critical knowledge about writing and publishing, it will also give you the opportunity to meet one-on-one with editors, agents, authors, and other professionals.

With FOUR free 15-minute appointments (FIVE for the first 75 who register for all three days), no conference provides more opportunities than the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference and the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. But with a faculty of over 50 at each conference, how can you be certain you’re making the best choices?

The helpful steps below will equip you for your conference experience, wherever that might be.

1. PRAY!

If you want to know what God wants you to do,
ask him, and he will gladly tell you,
for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply
of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it.
James 1: 5 TLB

2. Review the 79 genres/topics on the Editorial Needs Charts that our amazing Appointments Coordinator, Barb Haley, has painstakingly compiled based on responses from our Colorado faculty.

Ed Needs p 2 NF

Sample page. Click here for a PDF of the entire 9 pages that is readable.

3. Study the bios of the editors and agents who are interested in what you are writing and study any additional info about their editorial needs that accompanies their bio. (Note: Bios of the agents and other professionals will be added to the website soon.)

4. Visit their website and carefully read their guidelines for writers.

5. Keep in mind that your best option may be to meet with an author. If you do not have a manuscript or concrete idea to discuss, we recommend that you request appointments with authors. An author can help you evaluate the readiness of your manuscript for publication. Barb has also prepared a 9-page chart of “Areas of Expertise.” 1-14. Author bios will be added to the conference website soon.

6. Consider the option of a 30-minute paid critique. Yes, Barb has also created a 9-page chart (click here) for paid critiques. For even more info, including length parameters, that there is room on the chart to provide, click here.

My paid manuscript review gave me the most thorough
and helpful manuscript review I’ve had to date

7. Prepare for your appointments using the tips you’ll find by clicking here.

Finally, pray some more – but not desperate “please, God” prayers. Instead surrender your work – your words – to the Lord and trust that He knows the plans He has for you and for your writing.

Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for GOD‘s voice in everything you do,
everywhere you go; he’s the one
who will keep you on track.

Don’t assume that you know it all.
Proverbs 3:5-7 MSG

Stay tuned for exciting updates about the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference as the details fall into place.

Terry Brynan RN

The challenges Terry Brynan faces daily in Kenya are a sharp contrast to my struggles with computer issues and HTML (in the comfort of my office recliner).

Father, thank You for Terry’s faith and courage and tenacious efforts to help her people in the “far places.” Keep her safe and healthy. Continue to use her holy boldness to bring many to Jesus.

Hi my beloved family, friends and prayer warriors,

I hope all of you are well and blessed. As always, I love and miss you so much. Thank you for your continued prayers. I was sick with typhoid and pneumonia again, and then malaria but, I am ok. Keep praying God continues to strengthen me to accomplish His purposes and plans.

I finished the 14 meetings around all of the mountains and different areas. I met with about 1200 people. There was 100% support for closing the mountains.  Now, they are waiting for the rain.  Please pray it will rain. Pray God will bless it and make the grass grow and bring the water they need and supply all of their needs.

The meetings were filled with the young men who are usually far away in the mountains taking care of the cows. They returned to their areas when the rains came and the grass grew.  Their presence was a crucial element of proceeding forward with closing the mountains because they are the ones who move with the animals.  They were in complete agreement for the elders to close the mountains and the rules they would need to abide by.

The young men and boys heard the good news of Jesus, and many trusted in Jesus as their Savior.

There was no time between the end of the meetings to close the mountains and the entire generation of boys going off to get circumcised and live in the bush for the next three months. If I had waited there would have been no way to reach any of them.

In just three new areas God has called me to go, in only three days, about 400 people trusted Jesus.

At one place there were about 220 people gathered on the banks of a dry river bed.  They had watched the Jesus movie and all had trusted JesusWe prayed and praised God together.  We ate together and discussed closing the mountains. It was an amazing day. I was getting ready to leave and the women started to sing.  I thought they wanted something from me but, instead they wanted to give me a gift.  It is a rare thing here for people to give me a gift for no reason.  I had nothing to give them.  They came singing and dancing, and dangling in front of them was a big paint sized can of fresh honey to thank me. They didn’t expect anything in return. The Lord impressed on me, that when we praise and thank Him, and let Him know we love Him.  It is as sweet as honey to Him.

During the meetings, I distributed eye drops because so many have eye infections from dry dusty conditions, with little water and if left untreated, can lead to blindness. To combat nutritional anemia and anemia caused by malaria about 1000 families were given essential micronutrients and about 25,000 chlorine tablets were distributed to help reduce typhoid and water borne diseases.

The blind, the crippled, the elderly, the disabled and families especially appreciated the 100+ blankets and plastic sheeting for hut roofs and nursery schools (made of woven sticks).

The next plan for closing the mountains includes creating supplemental pasture in the lowlands.  The plan is to enclose and prepare 100 acres, 10 acres of pasture in 10 different locations, by fencing it with the cut branches of thorny bushes and trees, bush clearing, putting cut trees in gullies, and scratching the ground surface for seed preparation. These pastures will be used to produce seeds for reseeding, grass for harvest, and when the roots are more established, grazing.  I am waiting on the agreement for the seeds to begin community meetings.  Please pray for tremendous community support and that God will make a way for everything we need.  Pray it would be ready before the rains come and pray the rains come.

I finished delivering the mattresses and blankets for the children to begin sleeping at four of the schools in the bush. Each of those schools also received (1) 90 kg bag of posho, flour made from corn and sorghum, so the children who sleep there can have uji (porridge) for breakfast and ugali (like grits) for dinner.

Then, I found out the World Food Program (WFP) that has been delivering food (posho) for nursery school students all across Kenya stopped providing food for the nursery school students.  The responsibility was handed over to the counties but, my county did not accept the burden. There is not enough food at the schools to also feed the nursery students so I am guessing if nothing is done, the school will feed them and although they started late because the food for grades 1 and above came late, they will also want to close early because they will run out of food.   The nursery school children rely on the lunch they receive at schoolFor some of the children, it is the only meal they may have that day.  There is about one month left in this term. Please pray the children will have enough food.

God has provided the opportunity for me to present to the government offices and representatives of international organizations in my county in the last two weeks.  I have been able to share clearly and distinctly what is needed in the far areas of the bushThey are doing their steering for the coming year.  Pray God will bring the help that is needed.

It was after midnight, one night, I had had a long day and was returning home.  I stopped to spend the night, far in the bush, at I place I had had a meeting the day before. Where my truck was parked there were two young men arguing about something for a long time. I was in my truck praying and had enough of the disturbance.  I tried to break up the argument and that didn’t work.  I reached into my truck and laid on my horn for about a minute, hoping to distract them. They didn’t even miss a beat. I changed my approach, and kindly asked one of the boys to come with me and led him away from the argument where he could be reasoned with. He left. Everything quieted down immediately. I returned to prayingRuth, my helper, opened the door laughing.

Standing next to me were three old women, dressed in animal skin skirts, no shirts, traditional beads and shangas.  They had crept up to camp, each with two sticks, one in each hand.

Where is Chepurai? Who is disturbing her? Who is attacking her?” They had exclaimed to Ruth,” We heard the sound of her truck and we have come to beat off her attackers! We each found two good sticks and we have come. We decided, if she dies, we die together!”

I am Chepurai. It is my Pokot name. I was so moved by their decision to come to my rescue, no matter what the cost. I flung my arms around them.  I thought to myself, that’s love!  It’s not every day someone is willing to die for me!  But as the words resonated through my thoughts, I remembered Jesus. Jesus died for me! It cost Him everything. That is love!!!

Clarification

Mud

Clear as mud?

I need to clarify what I meant in my last post:

I’m slowly making progress updating the website that is now mobile-friendly. Sadly HTML is not user-friendly. Can anyone recommend a good book or website? And would you please pray that I can get the photos, bios, and editorial needs/areas of expertise of our 57 agents, authors, and editors online in the next couple of days?

I am NOT looking for a new webmaster. Celebration Web Design (SKWD Associates) is the BEST! I can’t say enough good things about them. Not only are they skilled web designers, they are deeply committed to Jesus Christ and to advancing His Kingdom through the world-wide web. They are always there for me when I have questions. They are my brothers in Christ and an essential part of the Write His Answer team behind the two conferences.

Celebration Web Design has done a great job making http://writehisanswer.com and http://colorado.writehisanswer.com mobile friendly. Their EZ-CMS (content management system) really is easy. Typically I do not need to use HTML, but when I do need to go into the Source code, I know just enough HTML to be dangerous and, sometimes, to create a mess. Part of the challenge is that I like to center lines of copy, but now that the sites are mobile friendly and I’m checking how the copy displays on my iPhone, I find centering lines often results in awkward lengths. I know my friends at SKWD can fix any problems I create. I just don’t want to be a pest.

I really need to be able to work with HTML – not just for the websites but for my blog on WordPress (https://writehisanswer.wordpress.com) and the Constant Contact email system I use. It’s frustrating not to be able to do the formatting i can so easily do (well, usually) in Quark. (For those who haven’t heard of Quark, it was the industry standard for desktop publishing until InDesign.)

The bottom line . . . sigh  . . . is that is all another learning curve in the midst of constantly pressing deadlines!

Lord, when doubts fill my mind,
when my heart is in turmoil,
quiet me and give me
renewed hope and cheer.
Psalm 94:19 TLB

Facing Elephants

elephantAre you facing an elephant?

More than likely your elephant, same as mine, is something you’ve been putting off doing because it’s just seems so big, so beyond your capability, so overwhelming . . .

You’d think after 20 years directing the Colorado Christian Writers Conference and 32 years directing the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference the task would be easier. Not so!

Each year the task seems more daunting.  And each year I have to remind myself that “God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn; he will never go back on his promises” (Rom. 11:29 TLB).

What has He promised you and me?

That it would be easy to follow Him? No! But He has promised always to be with us.

I’ve learned (but need to keep re-learning) that when I am weak, then I am strong—the less I have, the more I depend on him” (2 Cor. 12:10 TLB). elephant cookie

I know that in His strength you and I can eat the elephant a bite at a time!

Update: May 11-14

The faculty and program are in place. The brochure is in print. Lots of new to CCWC people are registering. Thank You, Father!

I’m slowly making progress updating the website that is now mobile-friendly. Sadly HTML is not user-friendly. Can anyone recommend a good book or website? Update: August 3-6
Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference

2 elephants
With the April 15 D-Day for opening online regisration looming, I feel like I’m facing not one but two elephants! There are days I fear I’ll be trampled under their weight. But “through your  faithful prayers and the generous response of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, everything he wants to do in and through me will be done” (Phil 1:19 MSG).

Are you facing an elephant today?  “Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” (Heb. 12:2-3 MSG).

Fighting to Win

This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from
and forget about
in a couple of hours.
This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish
against the Devil and all his angels.

Be prepared. You’re up against far more
than you can handle on your own.
Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued,
so that when it’s all over but the shouting
you’ll still be on your feet.” (Eph. 6:12-13 MSG)

Fight any spiritual battles lately? Or perhaps you’re in the midst of a battle right now. I know I am!

I just received the hard copy proof for the Colorado brochure. The workshop grid that is spread over two pages on the fold and had to be split is finally lined up correctly. But unbelievably the printer again has the bottom of the mailer upside down on the open end. I have explained again and again how the bottom needs to be on the fold for the Post Office. (One year I missed spotting this on the hard copy proof and the brochure was printed with the open end on the bottom. My mailing service convinced the post office to mail the brochures but it cost 20 or 25 cents more for each one! You can imagine how sick this made me since I mail about 5,000 brochures.) The printer does mailings and should know this without being told. And the file I submitted was set up correctly.

Father, please help me to give You my frustration. Help me to rejoice in the midst of this opposition knowing that the conference is obviously a threat to the evil one and that You have already won the victory. Help me not to stress over the delay of getting the brochure into the hands of the people You are calling to come. Thank You for the 17 online registrations I’ve already received and the faculty You have provided. I KNOW Your hand is on CCWC. Indeed, it is Your conference – not mine. And thank You that I finally found the missing 55 emails in the “To Do 2016 CCWC” Outlook folder. (I kept praying this prayer during a 40 minute phone call with the printer.)

There is no explanation for the missing emails. As I moved an email from my inbox into the “To Do 2016 CCWC” folder so it wouldn’t be buried in my inbox and not answered, the entire To Do folder emptied. The missing emails were not in my deleted folder. I searched for about two hours because these were important emails that needed to be answered. (Yes, I have a HUGE number of folders and emails in Outlook). I finally found them at the very bottom of the list of folders (where I had already searched two other times) in a second folder with the same name as the empty folder.

This kind of opposition so early in conference season is unnerving. And in six to eight weeks I’ll be going through the same process for the August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference.

Father I know You will use these battles to strengthen my faith muscles. Please help me put on the armor You provide and stand in Your strength.
