I love watching Father work!

Presently (January 14) there are 49 on faculty for the May 17-20, 2017, Colorado Christian Writers Conference with more to be added. So far that includes 6 agents, 18 editors, 14 authors, and 11 other professionals.

I’m working on the brochure and have spent the afternoon beginning the process of updating the website. If we have your USPS address, you will hopefully receive our 16-page brochure by mid-February. I’m working to open secure online registration by February 1.

Pray for me, please. Even though this is my 21st year directing the Colorado conference and 34th year directing the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference it doesn’t get any easier. But then Jesus never promised following Him would be easy. What He has promised is always to be with us. We can trust that what He calls us to do, He will equip us to do.

I cling to His promises as the challenge of planning two conferences often threatens to overwhelm me and make me doubt I have what it takes. The hardest part, the same as with writing a book, is getting started. Well, finishing what we start is tough, too!

Do you feel called to “write His answer” and yet struggle with self-doubts? Truthfully, through working with hundreds of writers through the years, I find that those who really have a gift with words and a message that needs to be published are the ones most likely to be crippled by self-doubts.

I shudder when I think of how many times I almost gave up writing because my self-doubts were so loud and insistent. Why would anyone want to read what I wrote? What made me think that I could write for the Lord? I wasn’t qualified! How could He possibly use someone who was only a high school graduate? I felt ashamed and woefully inadequate.

How it must have grieved the Lord when I failed to see that the Cross turns my minus into a plus – when I believed the lies of the evil one instead of His promises. And how much time I wasted in my self-centered and selfish focus on my doubts instead of on the needs Father was calling me to address through the words He would give me if I would just trust Him.

Today I was reminded of the November 2010 ASSIST News interview, “Author of End Times Political Thriller Hits New York Times Best Seller List with His Latest Middle Eastern Novel.” Talking about the decision to write his first novel, Joel Rosenberg said:

Failure has a way of focusing the mind and I’d come off of ten years of political failure in Washington DC and I thought, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m a Rosenberg, yet I am not a lawyer, a dentist, a doctor, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, an accountant or even a stockbroker.

I’ve got no financial genes and I can’t do anything practical. I write ‘Op-Eds’ that people don’t read. I write speeches people don’t listen to; the only thing I know how to do is write and clearly badly. But these are my loaves and fishes and I don’t want to be a failure; I want to be a blessing.

So, I told the Lord, ‘I want to be a servant of yours, Lord Jesus, so could you take these loaves and fishes, limited though they be, and would you break them, and bless them, and somehow feed people with them.’

It was then that I got this idea of writing a political thriller; a Middle East-based terrorism story that would have the Gospel woven into it. I wanted it, as readers got deeper into the book, to see the spiritual temperature rise. But the problem was that I didn’t know how to write a novel as I’d never written one before. I’d never even taken a class on writing a novel and I didn’t even like to read novels. So that was a problem.”

Are you struggling to see Father at work in your life? Are you battling self-doubts, writer’s block, rejection slips, procrastination? My book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers, has 33 chapters of answers I found during my journey of publishing 9 books and making over 1,000 sales to Christian periodicals. And to my amazement it’s been in print for 25 years! Click here for excerpts and ordering info.

Father, thank You for calling us to do what seems impossible and for Your faithfulness to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond as we choose to listen to You and not to our doubts.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity

Time does fly! Already the first week of the new year is history.

Did you accomplish what you hoped to get done last week? Or, like me, did you encounter frustrating obstacles? I definitely could have done without sitting in the dentist chair for FOUR HOURS! Still I’m grateful for the amazing technology that made it possible for the dentist to save several teeth.

Yes, technology is amazing, that is, when it’s working! I lost more hours trying to resolve a computer issue. I finally found Microsoft’s number and called. The tech was able to fix one problem, but he said he needed to transfer me to the next level of support to fix the other problem. The cost – $500. So much for the “free” support I thought came with my new subscription to MS Office 365.

I was again reminded again of the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12:10 (TLB):

When I am weak, then I am strong –
the less I have, the more I depend on him.”

My paraphrase:

“When I am tired and overwhelmed,
confused, and frustrated,
and when I do not feel smart enough
to figure out a feature on my Smartphone
or find the answer to a computer error message
then I can know His strength.
The less energy, time, wisdom,
and computer expertise I possess,
the more I depend on Him.”

How I thank God for His promises. They are my “faithful armor” (Psalm 91:4) when the evil one tries to convince me something is impossible.

And I’m so thankful for the prayers of friends and Father’s amazing answer when a nephew I hadn’t heard from in over 50 years called. He spent almost five hours with me working on my computer remotely and resolving problems. I am so, so grateful, but not just for his expertise. It was wonderful to connect with him again after all these years.

I had hoped to begin updating the websites for the May 17-20 Colorado and July 27-29 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. That didn’t happen. But I’m choosing to trust Father and His timing and enabling.

How about you?

a-full-inboxIf your inbox is like mine, it was stuffed with pre-Christmas enticements to buy stuff we really don’t need. And now, pre-New Year, you’re also probably overwhelmed with requests for year-end donations from numerous ministries and organizations. The needs are legitimate and dear to my heart.

No child should go to bed hungry, much less starve to death. No child or adult should be sexually abused or homeless. Human trafficking and the persecution of my brothers and sisters in Christ – the persecution of any person for we are all created in God’s image – is deplorable. How the Father heart of God must break.

It’s all too easy to wring our hands in despair when, instead, we need to clasp them in prayer. And then we need to put them to work on our keyboard starting and finishing what He is calling us to write.

An army of Christians committed to “write His answer” can make a difference – a H U G E difference if we don’t get discouraged and give up.

Father has given us a blueprint for our writing ministry in Habakkuk 2:2. I encourage you to end 2016 or begin 2017 by making time to study the Scriptures that amplify each section of this passage:

And the Lord said to me,
Write my answer
Make it large and clear
Write so that anyone can read it
At a glance
And rush to tell the others

You’ll find the references by clicking here. To listen to me presenting this Bible study at a seminar in CT, click here.

Father, You know how easy it is for us to feel overwhelmed by the needs around us. And You know how we doubt ourselves and the gifts You have entrusted to us. Please forgive us and help us to “write Your answer” in the new year.

Father, I grieve
for my nation that I love
and for Your people who are caught up
in the angry rhetoric that is dividing our nation.
I grieve even more for those who choose
to ignore the issues, to remain silent,
and not to exercise their responsibility to vote.

Father, I plead with You
to help us discern what is most important.
Give us the courage to stand
for the sanctity of life,
for marriage between a man and a woman,
for the nation of Israel surrounded by enemies.

Father, help us to recognize
that we are not fighting against people
made of flesh and blood
but against principalities and powers
intent on fueling angry thoughts and words
into explosive actions to destroy our nation.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow,
help us to trust that You are able
to work all things together for good.
Bring our nation back to You.
Help Your scribes to live
and to write Your answer!

David and all our children are home safe and sound. Hallelujah! They came home to a house filled with an ant infestation. They’re everywhere!

In our cars (not only around them–in them), on our counter tops, in our beds, I can’t tell you how maddening it is!

We’ve tried everything we can think of, but we can’t get rid of them. It’s intolerable, but we’re stumped as to what to try next.

Life here is just one thing after another right now. Sometimes your life is like that, too, isn’t it? What shall we do?

Bringing It Home To You

When random, mysterious, wonky issues crop up out-of-the-blue, the enemy is usually behind them.

God gives us lessons to teach us, refine us, and deliver us. He’s not trying to trip us up; He wants to grow us up.

The enemy, on the other hand, wants to destroy us and if he can’t do that, he wants to make our lives miserable, so that we’ll listen to his whispers when he says, “If God really loved you, these things wouldn’t be happening to you.”

Which is, of course, a lie straight from the pit!

Thoughts To Ponder

When life is topsy-turvy (for whatever reason), that’s no time to turn our backs on God. And it’s certainly no time to think He’s turned His back on us!

We might review how we got in this mess, and if it was by following God, we can ask Him if He wants us to continue going in this direction, or if He’s ready for us to change directions.

The one thing we absolutely, positively, undeniably should NOT do is make a decision based upon our circumstances, for they waffle to and fro. They are unreliable. God is not.

Sooner or later, these pesky ants will leave our home. But the enemy will remain, trying to distract us, discourage us, and if possible, destroy us by destroying our faith.

We cannot let the enemy win! I encourage you to hold fast, and keep believing.

If God says to move, do so. But if He does not, stay right where you are and wait for Him. He is on His way!

Thanks for joining me on this journey, Patricia.

Faith rock“Do you believe God can use you?” I asked in my last post.

It’s a question I also ask myself on days when doubts threaten to overwhelm me. I don’t doubt Him. I know He is faithful. It’s self doubts fueled by the accusations of the accuser that I struggle to overcome.

How can I – how can you – overcome the self-doubts that hold us back from experiencing the  victory that faith brings?

1. Cut the old tapes. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 TLB).

2. Stop listening to the wrong voices. “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:4 NASB)

3. Change your focus! “Look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had” (Phil. 2:4-5 TEV).

4. Renew your vision. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18 KJV).

5. Set specific and measurable goals. “We should make plans – counting on God to help us” (Prov. 16:9 TLB).

6. Refuse to let disappointments derail you. “No one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed” (Rom. 10:11 TLB).

7. Don’t reinforce your doubts. “But I’m not the person for a job like that” (Ex. 3:11 TLB).

8. Refuse to fall victim to discouragement. “He is a mighty Savior. He will give you
victory. He will rejoice over you with great gladness; he will love you and not accuse you” (Zeph. 3:17 TLB).

9. Stop procrastinating and persist. “Dreaming instead of doing is foolishness, and there is ruin in a flood of empty words” (Eccl. 5:7 TLB)

10.Draw near to the Promise Keeper. “When you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him” (James 4:8 TLB).

11. Stay in the Word. The whole Bible “is God’s way of making us well prepared at
every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” (2 Tim. 3:17 TLB).

12. Get to work. “Be strong and courageous and get to work. Do not be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with you; he will not forsake you. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB).

13Put on the armor and commit to what He is calling you to do – NOW! “So I run
straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around” (1 Cor. 9:26 TLB).

Now you have every grace and blessing;
every spiritual gift and power
for doing his will are yours
during this time of waiting
for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:7 TLB

Hi friends –

How times have changed since I wrote my first manuscript on a typewriter.

Underwood tpewriterWell I’m not as old as this antique, but I did love my IBM Selectric! I could make that little ball spin over 120 WPM. The thought of replacing my beloved Selectric with some kind of new technology intimidated me despite the promise that I could so much more by correcting my mistakes on a screen.Selectric type ball

A screen? I had no idea what they were talking about, although I admit the thought of throwing away my bottle of white-out was appealing. But really . . . it seemed too good to be true. Besides, even in my twenties I found change threatening and questioned my ability to learn something new.

I’m now 71, and I’m still intimidated by technology. Seems I just get comfortable with the software I’m using when, to keep up with the times, I need to upgrade. I seldom find the “user friendly” promise to be true. But thank You, Father, that You are faithful to help me do things I never would have imagined I could figure out how to do. And thank You for Celebration Web Design’s EZ-CMS (Easy Content Management System) that really is easy – even for me!

And so here I am managing not one but THREE websites, designing brochures and flyers in QuarkXPress, and typesetting books. I haven’t yet mastered the mystery of HTML, and I really don’t like the changes Microsoft made in Word 2015. And then there’s Access. I’m forced to use it for my mailing list, but I much prefer Excel.

Hopefully I haven’t lost you by now, for there really is a point I want to make.

Friends, we need to keep on learning!

I’m convinced one of the best places for a writer to learn is at a writer’s conference. And even after 33 years of serving as a conference director, I never cease to be amazed at what Father does each year at the Colorado and Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference.

The bios and editorial needs for the 19 editors and 20 Agents & Other Professionals on faculty at the August 3-6 Philly conference are now online. I’m still working on the page for our 19 authors. New this year I’m adding a thumbprint of  their books – well, one of their books or I’d never get done since many of our editors, agents, and other professionals are also authors with numerous published books. Thank You, Father, for giving us such an outstanding faculty of men and women who are committed to You and to “writing Your answer.”

Whether or not you are planning to come to the August 3-6 conference, you’ll find lots of helpful info and freebies on the conference website as well as my main website, www.writehisanswer.com.

I hope you’ll visit, and I pray you’ll choose to keep learning!

I Almost Said No

The invitation to teach two workshops at the Annual Convention of the Evangelical Press Association was totally unexpected. It was a great honor and an incredible opportunity professionally. But I almost said no.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity

Why? With deadlines pressing in on me for both the Colorado and Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference, taking three days off to go to a convention (plus making time to prepare two new workshops)  was anything but realistic. But to be honest, the bigger reason for my reluctance was that I felt intimidated by the audience I’d be addressing of “primarily editors and writers for Christian periodicals . . . most of them employed by magazines.”

Although I’ve served on the faculty of 70 Christian writers conferences and given my one and two-day writing seminars over 50 times around the nation, teaching “already good writers”  how to “enhance their skills” and networking outside the comfort zone of my own conferences created a “crisis of confidence.” The stranglehold of fear almost caused me to miss the tremendous blessings Father had planned.

But I said yes. And then I stressed and whined for weeks.

I finally stopped grumbling long enough to hear the Lord say, “Trust Me, child. The EPA Convention is My gift to you.”

And so I went April 6-8. And yes, indeed, I was blessed “exceedingly, abundantly beyond.”

I have no doubt God wants to bless many of you with the gift of the May 11-14 Colorado or August 3-6 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. “But I can’t get time off work. I don’t have anyone to watch my kids. I can’t afford the cost. And, the biggee, I’m afraid . . .”

Father, please help us to focus on You rather than on what we think we lack. Help us to overcome our self-doubts, our fears, by choosing to put our hope, our faith, our confidence in You. Thank You for the plans You have for us.

Partial scholarships are still available for the May 11-14 Colorado conference, but the registration fee increases April 12 so now is the time to ask. Registration for the August 3-6 Philly conference opens April 15. (Now that is a faith statement! A faculty of 55 editors, agents, and authors is now in place along with the keynotes, 8 continuing sessions, and clinics. I still need to assign 60 workshops, get the brochure online and to the printer, and do tons of work on the website. Thank You, Father, for reminding me – again – that nothing is impossible with you.)

Many, LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many to declare.
Psalm 40:5 (NIV2011)

Only Love

Despised and rejected.
Forsaken – it seemed,
even by His Father
who turned His face away,
Jesus writhed in agony,
His hands and His feet
nailed to a tree.

“They’re not worth it,”
Satan must have taunted.
“Come down from the cross.
Give them what they deserve.
Death – now
and for eternity!”

All of heaven’s armies
stood on alert – ready
to obey the Son’s command.
Would Jesus choose
to save Himself – or men?
Would He endure to the end?

Only love kept Jesus on the cross
knowing only His blood
could set men free.
“It is finished!” He shouted.
Sin and death no longer reign.
Christ has won the victory!

reflections on Christ - crucifixion

I gained a new understanding of what Jesus felt when the crown of thorns was shoved on his head when I fell into a rose bush. Leaning over too far and stretching awkwardly as I tried to pound in a fertilizer stick, I lost my balance and fell head first into one of the thorniest rose bushes in my garden. It’s really amazing that I wasn’t seriously hurt. Thank You, Father! And thank You, Jesus, for enduring the thorns and the lashing and the cross.  The strength of Your will, Your commitment to do what Your Father asked, and especially Your love for mankind even as they mocked You amazes me. “What wondrous love is this . . .”
