Think Big3This spring I had the joy of keynoting at the Stay Focused Writers’ Retreat in New Jersey. The theme of the retreat was “Think Big” based on Dr. Ben Carson’s book, Think Big, written with my good friend, Cec Murphey. I highly recommend this book and Gifted Hands, also written with Cec, and the movie, Gifted Hands.

I began my message with this powerful promise:

Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. – Ephesians 3:20 TLB

In my keynote I identified a baker’s dozen of attitudes and actions that hinder or help us to think big.

1. Failing to cut old tapes. – “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 TLB).

2. Listening to the wrong voices. – “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:4 NASB)

3. Self-centered rather than God-and-other-centered focus! – “Look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had” (Phil. 2:4-5 TEV).

4. Lack of vision. – “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18 KJV).

5. Failure to set specific and measurable goals. – “We should make plans – counting on God to help us” (Prov. 16:9 TLB).

6. Allowing disappointments to derail us. – “No one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed” (Rom. 10:11 TLB).

7. Sinking in the sea of doubts. – “But I’m not the person for a job like that” (Ex. 3:11 TLB).

8. Falling victim to discouragement. – “He is a mighty Savior. He will give you victory. He will rejoice over you with great gladness; he will love you and not accuse you” (Zeph. 3:17 TLB).

9. Procrastinating instead of persisting. – “Dreaming instead of doing is foolishness, and there is ruin in a flood of empty words” (Eccl. 5:7 TLB)

Instead we need to:

10. Draw near to the Promise Giver and Keeper. – “When you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him” (James 4:8 TLB).

11. Stay in the Word. – The whole Bible “is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” (2 Tim. 3:17 TLB).

12. Get to work. – “Be strong and courageous and get to work. Do not be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with you; he will not forsake you. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB).

Run13. Put on the armor and commit to what He is calling you to do – NOW! – “So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around” (1 Cor. 9:26 TLB).

Now you have every grace and blessing;
every spiritual gift and power
for doing his will are yours
during this time of waiting
for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:7 TLB

Interviews
GPCWC Faculty Member
Allen Arnold

As founder and former Publisher of Thomas Nelson Fiction, Allen Arnold was a strong advocate not just for story, but for the storyteller. He has worked with hundreds of authors and published more than 500 novels in his 20 years in Christian publishing.

Allen’s personal ministry is now to nurture the heart and spirituality of the storyteller. More recently, as Director of Content and Resources at Ransomed Heart Ministry, he has been able to expand his reach to help many others—besides just authors—get closer to God and live the story of their life with an awakened heart.

But he still has a special place in his own heart for the storyteller. That’s why he’s such a popular presenter at Christian writing conferences, and part of the reason he received the ACFW Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Allen will be presenting a five-part continuing session on “The Heart of the Storyteller” at the July 29 – August 1 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. I caught up with him to ask him some questions about this session and about his passion for nurturing the hearts of others.

Question: If I sell my stories and articles, then I’m a writer, or an author. That’s my identity; that’s who I am. Or am I missing something?

Here’s what is missing in that assumption: being called to write is not dependent on whether your article or story sells (“IF my story sells, THEN I am a writer”). God calls people in ways that often never correlates to monetary validation. That said, even when a person is called to be a writer and even if they sell millions of stories, that is never their identity. Your identity goes far deeper than being a writer. At your core, you are a son or daughter of the Father. He knows you by name. For who you are…not what you do. Some children of God are called to create. But calling isn’t your core identity – which is quite freeing because no matter what happens within your calling, it can’t touch your identity.

Question: I think most Christian writers believe they are called by God to write their stories. So, after we spend the necessary time learning the craft, all we need to do is start writing, correct? After all, if God wants us to produce, we should be busy producing. Isn’t that how we obey our calling?

The thought that writers should just get “busy producing” is prevalent…and toxic. And it is because it puts our focus on “doing” rather than “being.” And it can cause us to miss the bigger issue of why God invited us to create in the first place. Is it important for authors to improve their craft – yes. But more than that – or perhaps I should say before that – we are called into Creative Fellowship with God. What the world needs most is the warmth from the glow off the face of those who spend time with God. It’s the difference of a storyteller who sits around a small campfire telling stories…and a storyteller whose face is glowing so bright she doesn’t need a campfire to warm the souls of those listening.

Understanding why God invited you to create is the most foundational aspect of your calling. Start there and dive deep into all new waters…then move on to enhance your craft. But by all means start with why you were called and what that means. Because that changes everything.

Question: So I need to work with God as I write my novel and tell my story. But what about after the story is written? Then I have to go to conferences and pitch my manuscript; and get a blog and try to build a following; and I’ll need an author page on Facebook; and I should start tweeting on a regular basis; and what about Pinterest and Instagram… That all sounds so exhausting. Is there a better way to get my book in the hands of readers and still find time to work on my next story?

Right – it doesn’t just sound exhausting. It is exhausting. What I’ll say here is counter to much advice within the industry. But I think sometimes those in an industry can repeat an answer so many times that it starts to sound like absolute truth when it is just opinion. Let me offer another opinion based on working with hundreds of authors during 20 years in publishing as well as my experience now in a ministry that focuses on the heart.

I understand that publishing houses have less staff than they did years ago – so the more an author can do to promote their book, the better. And the larger following they have on-line, the higher the odds of a successful launch. That is horizontal (human) wisdom – but large on-line followings actually don’t guarantee a book’s success. And those called to write are not usually equally gifted at marketing. So rather than taking half your writing time to strive after social media – what if you spent 95% of your time doing what you were called to do, which is to create and write?

Sure it’s important to promote your book. Find others who are gifted at marketing and find a way for them to spearhead it – whether you pay them or trade services. Absolutely do the interviews and participate in spreading the word about why you wrote your book. But to assume your project will only succeed if you succeed at social media is not only exhausting…but basically godless because the assumption is it is all up to you to make it happen. In the great stories of the Bible – victory was never all on the shoulders of the person following God. If God has given you this message, then He will not be sidetracked by you not tweeting enough or not building your platform.

This topic is something that we’ll discuss more in my session. And please don’t take my comments as minimizing the promotional aspect of publishing. My degree is in marketing and I spent much of my career at major advertising agencies and overseeing author branding. I believe in the power of great promotions – I just don’t believe the author should feel they must become marketing experts or spend hours a day on social media to achieve success in the calling God has given them. I want these words to alleviate stress and allow authors to breathe deep so they can focus more on their calling.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity
We are pressed on every side by troubles,
but not crushed and broken.
We are perplexed because we don’t know why
things happen as they do,
but we don’t give up and quit.
2 Corinthians 4:8 TLB

But maybe you are really, really close to quitting – to giving up on what you felt God is calling you to do or to write. Honestly, haven’t you wondered why, when you’re trying to serve Him, He doesn’t make it easier? How does He expect you to keep pushing through all the obstacles? It just doesn’t make sense. And you’re so exhausted.

Yep, I’m writing from personal experience. This week has been a nightmare of trying so hard to get everything ready for the May 13-16 Colorado Christian Writers Conference but encountering problems every step of the way.On Monday Cindy and I lost Internet access off and on for several hours. Then Tuesday the printers wouldn’t go online. Exasperated and stressed, I purchased a new modem Wednesday that we tried to install today. Six hours and no Internet access most all of that time later, I finally got the old modem reinstalled and was able to get online so my son could remotely change settings that are way beyond my expertise to figure out. He even got the printers networked again.

In the midst of all this, a crisis in my extended family has consumed more valuable time. I am exhausted. And yes, the deadly Ds of discouragement, doubt, and even despair have been threatening to overwhelm me. But God . . .

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
Psalm 139:7 (NIV 2011)

Especially when I cannot feel His presence, when my prayers seem to be bouncing off the ceiling, I choose to keep believing in His faithfulness. He is strengthening my faith muscles for the even more difficult days that are ahead for Christians in our nation. I don’t feel strong enough to withstand the persecution I believe is coming, but the weaker I am, the more I depend on Him.

Friends, we cannot, we must not, give up doing what God is calling us to do. We need to trust Him and not grieve Him by our lack of faith. And remember, “Even when we are too weak to have any faith left, he remains faithful to us and will help us, for he cannot disown us who are part of himself, and he will always carry out his promises to us” (2 Tim. 2:13 TLB). Thank You, Father!

It’s not too late to register! Walk-ins are welcome, but if you register online through May 9 you’ll save the $15 late fee. (I call it the procrastinator’s fee!) We’ll be glad to work out time payments if needed.

Banner 2015 GPCWCAnother really exasperating challenge I had this week was pulling up the latest Access database of names to create the mailing list for the brochure that is now off press. You can imagine my distress when I discovered a number of missing names. So . . . if you’ve been to a recent conference but don’t receive a brochure within the next week, please let me know. You can access it online, but since it’s 16 pages, it’s helpful to have it in booklet form. You have until June 1 to register at the early price. The first 75 to register receive an additional free appointment so don’t delay.

“I never promised it would be easy
to follow Me,
but I have promised always to be with you.”

These were the first words I felt the Lord speak to my spirit many years ago. I admit the first part of His message was not really what I wanted to hear then or now. After all, He could make it easy, or at least easier. He knows I’m committed to doing what He calls me to do, so why does it have to be so hard? Why do I constantly encounter problems and obstacles? I’m weary of the stress and time pressures – of feeling like I’ve got a target on my back. The spiritual battles are intense.

I’m often reminded of the apostle Paul and how he begged the Lord not once, but three times, to take away the thorn in his flesh.

Each time God said, “No. But I am with you; that is all you need. My power shows up best in weak people” (2 Cor. 12:9 TLB).

So I choose to rely on the fact that He is with me – and with you. He loves us too much to allow our faith muscles to become weak and flabby. He uses the attacks of the evil one to draw us closer to Him and to teach us to depend on Him and on His promises. And friends, it is our testimony to going and growing through the difficulties we encounter that will speak far more strongly to unbelievers than a problem-free life.

Conference Updates

CCWC banner with lodge 2015It’s hard to believe that I’ll be leaving for Colorado in a little over two weeks. There is still so much to be done. I’m so grateful Cindy Watkins is here from North Carolina. I’m trusting the Lord that “he will see to it that everything is finished correctly” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB) – and in time. Speaking of time, there is still time to register and to request one-on-one appointents with our faculty of 55 authors, editors, and agents.

Banner 2015 GPCWCI’ve worked all week on the 16-page brochure for the July 29 – August 1 Greater Philly conference. I’ve encountered far ore unexplained problems than usual, but finally it is done and at the printer. You can view it online at http://philadelphia.writehisanser.com/brochure.

Empty tomb

Darkness Shattered

They had believed he was the Messiah.
Leaving everything behind,
they followed him.
The Kingdom of God
had seemed so real, so near.
He healed the sick,
fed the hungry,
calmed the storm at sea –
and in their hearts.
His words had given them life
and hope and purpose.
But now he was dead.
How could they have been
so mistaken, so misled?

Hiding in the room
where he had broken the bread
and passed the cup,
hopelessness and despair
closed in around them.
They laughed –
a cold, hard, bitter laugh –
when Mary said she had seen him.
People didn’t come back to life
after dying on a cross.

Suddenly the darkness shattered
at the sound of the familiar voice.
“Peace be with you.”
Jesus stood before them
not dead – but alive!
Light filled the room
and the darkness in their hearts.
Everything he had taught them was true.
He was and is and shall be
alive – forevermore!
Christ is risen.
He is risen, indeed!

 Choices

Arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane,
You could have called on heaven’s armies;
yet You allowed them to take You captive.

Falsely accused in a mockery of a trial,
You could have denied who You were;
yet You convicted Yourself.

Physically and emotionally abused,
You could have struck down Your tormenters;
yet You remained silent and turned the other cheek.

On the way to the cross,
You could have thought only of Yourself;
yet You spoke with compassion to Jerusalem’s daughters.

Nailed to the cross and spit upon by the crowd,
You could have cursed Your enemies;
instead You prayed, “Father, forgive them.”

Taunted to “come down from the cross!”
You could have done exactly that;
yet You chose to suffer and die
that I might have the choice to live in You.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity
Procrastination is a sin;
it brings me endless sorrow.
I know I should stop doing it.
I think I’ll start tomorrow!

No doubt you’ve seen this poem or something similar. I checked the Internet to attribute it and found 4,390 entries! Obviously procrastination is a hot topic that, like the old game of hot potato, we quickly toss (pass the blame) to someone or something else. Really, isn’t it easier to blame someone else for causing us to procrastinate or to move to another task to avoid doing the thing(s) we know we need to do?

While no one is immune from procrastination, I think writers are especially prone. I’m not pointing an accusing finger at you – I’m pointing it at myself. Despite the chapter on “Overcoming Procrastination” that I wrote for my book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers, I struggle with procrastination as much or perhaps more than others. How else could I have written that chapter? I’m an expert! If you’re curious about what I’m learning (but sadly not always applying), click here to read the chapter online.

I especially struggle with procrastination when it comes to planning the Colorado and Greater Philly Christian Writers Conferences. I know Father has entrusted these conferences to me. Watching Him work and do Ephesians 3:20 things each year (it’s now 32 years for Philly and 19 for Colorado) is one of my greatest joys. It’s just the getting started that’s hard. Well, okay, the entire process is hard! I know I’ll face computer challenges and overwhelming to-do lists and time pressures that will stretch me far beyond my abilities, my limited IQ (it’s amazing how dumb my computer and smart phone can make me feel), my wisdom, my strength . . .

And that’s the problem! I procrastinate when I focus on me – on my self-doubts and feelings of inadequacy rather than trusting the Lord to enable me to do what I can never do on my own. Although the world says depending on anyone or anything but ourselves is weakness, like the apostle Paul I’d rather embrace my weaknesses knowing that “when I am weak, then I am strong – the less I have, the more I depend on him” (2 Cor. 12:10 TLB). God-confidence is far better than self-confidence!

pen & inkwellWhen Words Don’t Come

Guest post by
Starr Ayers

If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. Habakkuk 2:3 NLT

Staying in tune with God can be difficult … especially when we don’t hear anything. As I drove my daughter, who has Down Syndrome, to an appointment, she listened to her favorite station through her headphones. Before long, she huffed and began thumping on her radio.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

She gave no reply but continued to thump her radio in frustration.

“What’s wrong? Isn’t your radio working?”

“No.”

“How long has it not been working?” I asked.

No answer.

“Did it work yesterday?”

“No.”

“Did it work the day before?”

“No.”

“Did you wear your headphones at work anyway?”

“Yes.”

My heart broke. After my daughter’s appointment, I stopped at the store for batteries, replaced the old ones in her radio, and drove her back to work. When I left, she was wearing her headset and was working to the beat of the music once more. As I climbed into my car, God whispered, “She didn’t hear anything, but she kept on listening. You should too.”

Once again, my daughter was the teacher. I was the student. Sometimes, God is silent. During those times, the temptation to change the channel is great. We want to remedy the situation ourselves. Search in other directions. Fill the dead air with the sound of our own voice or the voices of others, or simply “thump” in frustration.

Although the words of today’s text may not be the words we want to hear, they do give us some much-needed insight. Listen. Keep watch. Remain steadfast. Live in expectancy. God will speak. He won’t remain silent forever. Although He may not rush in with His answer as quickly as I supplied the batteries for my daughter’s radio, His timing will be perfect.

Don’t grow weary and lose heart, my friend. Keep on listening. God’s words will come, and you’ll be dancing to the rhythm of His beat once more.

Israel Prayer Alert Mar 2Emergency Prayer Alert to Christian Friends of Israel Around the WorldFor if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, NIV)

Christian Friends of Israel – Jerusalem is posting this special prayer alert around the world [reprinted with permission] to motivate Christians everywhere to pray for a much-loved Prime Minister of Israel. He has just departed for the United States on a difficult, but extremely important mission, where he will walk into the Chamber of the US Congress with a message on his heart similar to that of Queen Esther when she knew she had to speak out on behalf of her people. Someone said “who knows whether he was elected so that he may be ready in such a time as this?” The Bible story of Esther shows that Mordechai the Jew refused to bow before Haman, and came from the tribe of Binyamin. It is reported he was a descendant of Binyamin, son of Jacob, who refused to bow to Esau. Benjamin is the English name for Binyamin in Hebrew. The Israeli Prime Minister will have the weight of centuries on his shoulders as we hope he will speak the words of Esther and allow his voice to echo to all corners of the world. He cares for the nation of Israel, for the United States and the world and will go only to warn of the danger of a nuclear Iran for the entire world; as Iran’s primary goal is the elimination of the Jewish state.

Recalling the story of Esther, we read also that the Jews of Shushan were supposed to have been executed. It was Haman’s desire as he carried within him the hatred for the Jewish people as did his ancestors, the Agagites. Every year on the 13th of Adar Israel observes the Fast of Esther. She entered the dangerous arena of the king’s court without being invited. When the tables were turned, the Jews received permission from King Ahasuerus to gather and defend themselves, on the 13th of Adar. They struck only those who had risen to kill them–and they succeeded. It will actually be on the 13th of Adar, in the year 5775 (2015) that the “man of the hour”, the messenger for the nation of Israel, her Prime Minister, will be accompanied in spirit by 8,000,000 hearts – the citizens of Israel. There will also be millions of Christians around the world who stand with and pray for this beloved nation and people, going with him in spirit.

This historical speech will be broadcast in Israel, with a five-minute delay. One Israeli stated, “Jewish people from across time and space will be watching and waiting for him to raise his hand and say. A report in Israel this past week stated “It is this Haman that is our adversary and most wicked enemy” (Esther 7:6); that Bibi tells them 4-year-old Adele Biton did not just die of pneumonia, but her death was the result of a murderous stone-throwing attack; that the Jews at the kosher supermarket in France were not murdered because “zealots randomly shot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris,” as Obama stated, but because they were Jewish.” May he also state unashamedly the truth that centrifuges in Iran are spinning at a rapid pace to commit eventually commit genocide against God’s Chosen People.

We call upon our Christian friends of Israel around the world and ask that as Esther solicited her people to pray and fast on her behalf, that we would also do the same and fast and pray for Prime Minster Netanyahu. Esther chose to disregard protocol in the face of possible extermination of her people. She succeeded in averting an evil decree. As a result, Jewish people to this day around the world celebrate the Festival of Purim. It is no coincidence that “the most remarkable serendipitous aspect of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech is that it is scheduled for the very day before Jews will be observing the Fast of Esther and Purim this year, to recall a time when a heroic Queen decided that the survival of her people took precedence over protocol. (Rabbi Benjamin Blech, Aish.com, 2/22/2015).

“Religious leaders are warning that the United States is nearing a day of judgment based on its treatment of the nation of Israel. What’s more, they say, signs in the heavens are coinciding with what is shaping up to be an unexpectedly controversial address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on March 3 and… Pastor Mark Biltz of El Shaddai Ministries warns that “our nation will be judged” based on whether the United States sides with or against the Jewish state. Biltz believes signs in the heavens and correlations with feast days on the biblical calendar show such a judgment may be coming soon.” “When Netanyahu speaks before Congress on March 3, this is the day before the Fast of Esther when the enemies of Israel, specifically Persia (Iran) had planned to destroy the nation of Israel, he said. “The next day is Purim, which celebrates the day Israel achieved victory over Iran. The timing significance of this is just as important as the timing of the blood moon.” Pastor Ray Bentley of Maranatha Chapel in San Diego, California, enthusiastically agrees with Biltz and warns that Christians need to be “praying like they never prayed before”… As Biltz puts it, “God says He will divide the sheep from the goats, one nation from another, and He will do it on the basis of those who supported Israel and those who didn’t.”  (World Net Daily, Saturday, February 28, 2015).

On September 27, 2012, Prime Minister Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations. He spoke about the danger Iran and radical Islam poses to the world. He also clearly presented the Jewish claim to the Land of Israel by quoting the Bible. At that time he showed  how close to the redline Iran is before it completes Stage 2 of the uranium enrichment process. He made his case to the world on a chart with a drawing of a bomb on it that the entire western world faces if Iran is allowed to succeed.

Let’s Enter the Throne Room and Pray:

·         Pray that Prime Minister Netanyahu, will receive strength and courage from God not to bow or back down. May his trip to Washington be one of truth in order to awaken those who slumber in dark and dangerous times.

·         Cry out to the Lord fervently that he will not come under attack (as Mordecai also came under attack by some). Mordecai was held in high esteem by many of his brothers but not “all” of them. (Esther 10:3).

·         Ask the Lord to keep politics from prevailing and that only truth will prevail during this important historical speech.

·         Intercede for for the US Congress to welcome the Prime Minister and that he might move the hearts of all those with righteous hearts and consciences in the political realm today in America. “I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication.” (Psalm 142:1, KJV).

·         Beseech the Lord  for wisdom and knowledge (Proverbs 8:11, 35) to come forth from the lips of the Prime Minister and that he will know he doing the right thing for his nation and people, not wavering in his decision to speak truth at this time to the world arena of nations. “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver”  (Proverbs 16:16).

·         Pray for his safety, security and protection at all times and that no harm or danger come near him at anytime.

·         Pray that the Lord will be with him from the time of departure from Israel until he returns home to Israel.

Please feel free to send this email to your family, friends, pastors, churches and lovers of Zion on every continent. Let us mobilize, rally together and marshal the prayer power that will be needed to ward off the forces of evil that are against this voice from being raised in the US halls of Congress at this significant time. This “call up” for prayer is as important as any prayer has ever been for such a time as we are now facing. May the courage of Esther, the righteousness of Daniel and the wisdom of King Solomon go with the Prime Minister as a chosen vessel “for such a time as this”.

Sincerely for the Nation of Israel,
