At my writing seminars I’ve often said, “Some of you haven’t suffered enough to be a really good writer.” Ouch! I know that’s not what they, or you, want to hear, but I also know that it’s out of the crucible of suffering that our writing impacts our readers in ways that writing out of head knowledge, but not heart (and hard) experiences, is unable to do.

I’ve been writing since 1972. (Yikes that’s almost 40 years!) Most all of my 1,000 plus sales to Christian periodicals and eight books have been based on personal experience. As my mentor, Anne Sirna, used to tell me, I’ve got great grist for my writing mill because of all the problems I’ve faced. I’d sigh and tell her I didn’t need more problems to write about – that I hadn’t yet written about the last set of problems. (Problems are groupies – yes? It  seems we never are confronted with just one problem at a time.)

Romans 5:3-4 (TLB) says, “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials for we know that they are good for us – they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady.”

I don’t welcome problems, and I don’t pray for patience knowing it will be tested! But I am grateful for all the ways God has proved He is faithful and for the opportunities He has given me to write out of heartaches to encourage others. It is a joy and a privilege to “pass on to [others] this same help and comfort God has given [me]” (2 Cor. 1:4 TLB).

Recently, I taught a workshop on “Going & Growing, Writing & Speaking through the Hurts.” It is part Bible study, part testimony, and part how-to. The handout can be downloaded free of charge at http://writehisanswer.com/CDs_&_Tapes.htm. The workshop is available on CD for $6 plus $3 shipping. You can order securely online at https://writehisanswer.com/order_form.htm.

There are many ways we can weave our life experiences into our writing, but I believe one of the most powerful ways is through personal experience stories. Last month I taught my “Writing the Personal Experience Story” workshop for the Vine and Vessels Christian Writers Conference in Delaware. Click here for an outline of the workshop that lists the seven essentials and seven pitfalls of good PE story writing. This workshop is also available on CD for $6 plus $3 shipping and comes with a helpful writer’s check-off list. Save on shipping by ordering  CDs for $15, or add to your order with one or more books at the following links:

Father, thank You for Your faithfulness. Thank You for calling us to write out of our hurts to point others to You. And Father, please encourage
those who are presently facing difficult circumstances with the assurance that You are with them and will help them to go and grow through their hurts.

Blessed Is He!

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
The crowd cheered and sang praises.
They waved palm branches
and threw their cloaks before Him.
But Jesus was solemn as He traveled that road –
that road to the cross.
As God incarnate He knew all that was to come.
He saw not just His own death on the cross,
but the persecution of His followers
and the destruction of Jerusalem.
He saw nation rising against nation –
the madness of yet-to-be-born rulers.
And Jesus wept.
He would be wounded and bruised for our sins,
chastised that we might have peace,
lashed that we might be healed;
yet few would accept His gift of life.
The darkness of evil would continue to reign,
but the light of His love
would not be extinguished.
Entrusted to us,
His light will grow brighter.
A cloud of witnesses are cheering us on,
to daily take up our own cross
and follow Him closely.
Blessed is He who is coming – again!

I have no doubt the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference will be a life-changing conference. From Bill Myer’s “Hearing His Answer” keynote Thursday morning through Bob Hostetler’s closing keynote, “A Writer’s Dream,” CCWC 2011 will encourage and equip you to write about a God who is real, who is reachable, and who changes lives. It is critical that we do exactly that whether through books, periodicals, or the Internet.

Through nonfiction and the power of story we can “Write His Answer in an Age of Opposition” as Liz Babbs from Great Britain will challenge us in her Thursday evening keynote. William Agius from Mission International will speak from first-hand experience of the “Works of God in the Middle East” on Friday morning. That evening four members of the faculty will briefly address the need to “Write His Answer to the Issues that Concern Us” followed by round tables. Saturday morning Rusty Wright from The Amy Foundation will talk about “Advocacy Apologetics: Finding Common Ground.”

As I listen to the news, I can’t help but wonder how much longer we will have the freedom to print and distribute Christian literature. I am convinced that NOW is the time to “Write His Answer.” The sense of urgency I feel is underscored by Wednesday’s news that Shahbaz Bhatti, the Minister of Minorities in Pakistan and the only Christian on the cabinet, was martyred. If you read my previous  blog, you know that he spoke at the Philly conference about ten years ago. Daily I hear about Christian brothers and sisters around the world who are being persecuted or martyred for their faith, but this is the first time I personally know someone who has paid the ultimate price.

In a video prior to his assassination Shahbaz said, “I want to share that I believe in Jesus Christ who has given His own life for us. I know what is the meaning of cross. And I am following of the cross” (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12617562).

We will “Focus on the Cross” in CCWC’s Wednesday evening opening session with Sister Hope, a friend of Shahbaz who has written three must-read articles about him at www.assistnews.net

Please join me in praying for Shahbaz’ mother and for the Christians in Pakistan. And pray for our witness as Christians here in America. I visited the Belief blog on CNN Wednesday (http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/02/critic-of-pakistan-blasphemy-law-shot-and-killed/#comments) and was appalled by the comments. “Ohhhh, I bet there’s a LOT of christians who wish they could make blasphemy laws here in the U.S.  Christian Sharia Law, here we come!” one person said.

My heart cries out, “Oh that we might write and live Your answer.”

Breaking News on ASSIST News Service immediately caught my eye this morning. Pakistan Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was shot dead by gunmen who ambushed his car in broad daylight in the capital Islamabad. Shahbaz was the cabinet’s only Christian minister. He had received death threats for urging reform to the blasphemy laws.

I met Shahbaz over ten years ago when he spoke at the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. His passion for the Lord and burden for Christians to be free to worship Him touched me deeply. Now Shahbaz is with the Lord. He has received a “well done, good and faithful servant,” but my spirit grieves that his voice has been silenced. Who will take his place?

Jesus said, “If any of   you wants to be my follower . . . you must put aside your own pleasures and shoulder your cross, and follow me closely. If you insist on saving your life, you will lose it. Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live” (Mark 8:34-35 TLB).

In a world that is growing increasingly hostile to Christians, will we take our stand for Christ? Or will we watch silently as our nation abandons the biblical principles upon which we were founded, the name of our Savior and Lord is blasphemed, and our freedom to proclaim Him erodes?

Father, please help us to live and to write Your answer!

As reported on CNN, the billboard below recently went up on Rt. 495 at Kennedy Blvd (on the NJ side, right before the Lincoln Tunnel entering Manhattan).

What is happening to our nation that was founded on Judeo/Christian principles? Are we like the frog in that kettle, unaware that the heat has been turned up and that we are in grave danger of losing our freedom to worship God?

Those who oppose the public display of nativity scenes become more militant every year. Public schools now celebrate Christmas as a “winter holiday.” Retail stores want the business Christmas brings but are careful not to mention Christmas in their ads for fear they will alienate someone. More often than not when the name of Jesus is spoken publicly it is in derision rather than reverence. “Political correctness” demands tolerance for every belief but Christianity!

I’ve never forgotten the words of a friend who grew up in Switzerland before the start of the Second World War. She said, “The church in Germany saw what was happening, but the church in Germany was silent.”

What of the church in America today? What about you? What about me? Will we remain silent? Is it a “myth” that Jesus has changed more lives for the good than anyone who ever lived – that He has changed your life? Will “reason” bring peace on earth and hope for the hopeless? Will we deny Him or proclaim Him as King of kings and Lord of lords?

Father, please stir us to action. And please, as people drive by this billboard, blind them to the lie it proclaims. Cause them to only see Jesus in the manger and to KNOW that Jesus is the reason for the season!

Yes, hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah,Hallelujah.
The kingdom of this world is become.
The kingdom of our lord and of his Christ, and of his Christ.
And he shall reign for ever and ever. . . .
King of kings, and lord of lords. King of kings and lord of lords.
And he shall reign for ever for ever and ever.

The Hallelujah Chorus has always moved me deeply but never so much as in this video (http://www.philly.com/philly/video/106492678.html) of 650 choristers who burst forth into song at Macy’s in center city Philly on October 30.

As we move into the Christmas season, please embolden us, Father, to point others to the One whose birth we celebrate. Please turn our nation back to You.
