Frances Schaeffer asked this question that we need to daily ask ourselves. Do you feel the urgency of the days we are living in. How should we than live? Father, raise up Your army of believers. Help us to be bold and uncompromising as we share that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

Rev. Franklin Graham, head of the international Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse and son of world-renowned preacher Billy Graham, said that given all the ‘bad news’ about the killing of Christians by Muslims in some countries, and attacks on Christians by the media and the government even in America, he cannot ‘help but wonder if we are in the last hours before our Lord Jesus Christ returns,'” reports CNS News.

“As I read the news, I can’t help but wonder if we are in the last hours before our Lord Jesus Christ returns to rescue His church and God pours out His wrath on the world for the rejection of His Son,” said Rev. Graham in a post on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) website.

“I don’t know if we have hours, days, months, or years—but as Christians, God calls us to take the truth of…

Lord Jesus, please help believers worldwide not to close our eyes and hearts to the horror of what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Iraq – and to the children. Move us to pray and to speak on behalf of the 100,000 Christians and 50,000 Yazidis who have been forced to flee for their lives. Help us to believe that we can make a difference through our prayers, through sharing the need with others, through urging our government to help, and through our gifts of financial assistance.

Friends, please make time to read the article below by Joel Rosenberg, to listen to his interview with an Iraqi pastor, and to pray with this pastor for “courage and wisdom.”

(Washington, D.C.) — Right now, we are witnessing horrific war and bloodshed and lawlessness in the epicenter. We are seeing some of the worst persecution in the modern history of the Middle East unfold before our eyes. Radical Islamic extremists are crucifying and beheading Christians, forcing followers of Christ to convert or die, driving Christians from their homes and looting all their possessions. This is particularly true in Iraq and Syria, where genocidal conditions are emerging.

Much of the world is silent, but the Church must not be. We must stand with our brothers and sisters in Christ — pray for them, love them, stand with them, encourage them, and help them in every practical way we can. We also need to love and care for Muslims and others who are being mercilessly attacked by the Radicals. They are sheep without a shepherd, harassed and helpless.

We must urge world leaders to take decisive actions to…

PUSH coverA writers’ conference
that is more than
a conference just for writers!

Do you share the growing sense of urgency I feel as you watch the news? I believe the following “Specials” the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference is offering July 31 and August 1 are critically important in equipping us to effectively “live His answer.” Please join us. If you live too far away, I urge you to order the CDs after the conference. The order form will be posted on http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com.

Living in the 11th Hour (Thursday, July 31, 10 am to noon) with a panel of eight including Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Association. The goal of the panel, in light of the urgency of the day we live in, is to engage the conference in a moderated discussion on how the Church in our nation can best prepare to stand its ground “in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Persecution is coming. Persecution is here.  How do we stand in Christ, with Christ, for Christ, and with each other in these darkening days—not letting our hearts grow cold or our ‘well-doing’ grow weary? If this IS the Eleventh Hour of earth history (and even if it is not)…how do we joyfully get up each day (while the world is falling down around us) and follow Jesus? (Moderated by Mark Ammerman, author of the end times novel, PUSH.)

Mining for Gold (Thursday, July 31, 1:00 – 3:00 pm) – Learn steps to studying the Bible that will provide exciting, fresh content for your spiritual life, writing, and teaching. Tap into the transforming power of Scripture! Bible teacher and author Julie Coleman offers hands-on instruction in digging deep into God’s Word. Come and find those hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

Reaching Seekers & Skeptics (Thursday, July 31, 3:30 – 5:30 pm) with Rusty Wright, award-winning author, syndicated columnist, and lecturer who has spoken on six continents. Learn how seekers and skeptics think and feel, what they want and why. Practical tools for finding common ground, understanding felt needs, grabbing attention, touching hearts and minds, and sensitively communicating spiritual truth verbally, in writing, and via the Internet even if you’re not a techie. God can use you to reach seekers and skeptics.

Save Our Children (Friday, August 1, 1:00 – 3:00 pm) with Rick Marschall, author of 74 books and hundreds of magazine articles. Christians are pilgrims and strangers in this world. Surely every believer senses that these times are darker, more dangerous than ever. Our culture has turned hateful toward Christians and children are the primary targets of the enemy. There are things we can and must do as Christians. Let us engage!

There is no charge for Save Our Children. The Thursday Specials are $25 for one, $40 for two, $55 for all three. Please use the registration form at http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/specials. All of our morning and evening keynotes in Chatlos Chapel are free of charge. Following the Thursday and Friday evening keynote we will have a book signing. No registration is needed for the keynotes or book signing.

Of course the conference also offers a wealth of learning opportunities for beginning and advanced writers as well as an all-day Teens Write program on Thursday, July 31. For specific information check out our 16-page brochure athttp://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/brochure.

In my keynote at the Super Saturday sponsored by Lancaster Christian Writers Fellowship last Saturday I quoted Chuck Colson’s sobering words in Against the Night, Living in the New Dark Ages.

Sunset_Mountains_Worship_Background

“‘Dark Age’ is a strong term. I recognize that. Yet in recent years I’ve had a growing sense of storm clouds gathering on the horizon . . .  The forecast is foreboding . . . We scan the horizon with unease.

“We sense that things are winding down, that somehow freedom, justice, and order are slipping away. Our great civilization may not yet lie in smoldering ruins, but the enemy is within the gates.

“The times seem to smell of sunset. Encroaching darkness casts long shadows across every institution in our land. . . . We do face a crisis in Western culture, and it presents the greatest threat to civilization since the barbarians invaded Rome.”

I feel such a strong sense of urgency to “write His answer” – now. I believe the day is fast approaching when we will not have the freedom to print or distribute Christian literature or to share our faith on the Internet. Father, please open our eyes to the “signs of the time” and help us to “Make the most of every chance [we] get. These are desperate times!” (Eph. 5:16 MSG).

Today, April 15, is the last day to register for the May  14-17 Colorado Christian Writers Conference before the price increases.  Because I believe Father will use this conference powerfully, I am praying you will seriously consider coming.

Michael Gantt, a pastor from Vermont who keynoted some years back, said something I’ve never forgotten when he captured the heart of the conference in the video I just uploaded to the conference website. “It is very critical that you believe what God has to say is relevant to this generation,” he said. “It is very critical that you believe, that you believe, that God will use you to bring His message to the world.”

Please take 3-1/2 minutes to view the video at http://youtu.be/-qfhH5NH7XE.

Father, please help everyone who reads these words not to doubt You or the gift of words You have entrusted to them. Move mountains to get them to the mountain in Colorado May 14-17. I know You will meet us there.

Keep writing and living His answer!

Home at Christmas
How fast the year has flown, I reflected as I took the photographs off the mantle to decorate it for Christmas. A charred mark on the paneling behind one of the photos instantly reminded of a Christmas when our home had been anything but peaceful.

My mother and stepfather were visiting. The relationship was strained, but we had been trying to keep the peace. On Christmas Eve the tension erupted into a bitter argument. The smell of burning wood stopped me from saying things I would have later regretted. A candle had tipped over on the mantle causing the paneling right near the thermostat to smolder. Trembling with fear of what might have been, I soaked the wall with water and later hid the damage with a photo. The damage in the relationship with my parents was not so easily hid. Painful memories have a way of refusing to stay camouflaged.

At Christmas we are forced to face the fact that all is not always “calm” and “bright” in our relationships with a brother or a sister, a parent or a child, an in-law or cousin. This season of joy can turn into one of misery as we have no choice but to spend time with people who go out of their way to avoid us the rest of the year.

When our homes are filled with conflict, what can we do to have “peace on earth, good will to men”?

1. Keep our eyes on the One whose birth we celebrate. The Gospel of John opens with the poignant words: “His life is the light that shines through the darkness–and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John l:5 TLB). The reality of that first Christmas was not just the angels’ song, but Herod’s decree that every baby boy two years old and under be slaughtered (see Matthew 2:16). The shadow of the cross was already hanging over the Holy Family as they fled to Egypt.

Jesus never promised us problem-free relationships, but He has promised to give us the wisdom to know how to love those who may be anything but lovable. Difficult relationships do not have to spoil the joy of Christmas if we follow Jesus’ example and respond with love and forgiveness.

2. Try not to put unrealistic demands on ourselves. Christmas Eve I typically am still racing to complete my “to-do” list and end up too tired to enjoy Christmas much less to cope with difficult family members. We need to learn when to make a good night’s sleep a priority so that we’re able to handle added emotional pressures.

3. Avoid having unrealistic expectations of others. It is unlikely that people who have been less than pleasant throughout the year will suddenly become nice just because it is Christmas. Yes, I believe God works miracles, but it is just as great a miracle to learn not to set ourselves up to be hurt through our unrealistic expectations.

I cannot remove that charred area of paneling without replacing the entire wall, but it can serve as a reminder that if I want peace in my family, it must begin with me. Truly, “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself” (2 Cor. 5:19 NIV). Because Christ came, we can be reconciled to one another.
___________

It’s been over 35 years since that traumatic Christmas Eve. Thank You, Father, for bringing Your peace to these strained relationships and for the assurance that my mother and stepfather are now home with You. Please bring Your peace – Your shalom – to families in conflict. Restore estranged relationships and help us to love others as You love us.

As I stood in the Christmas isle at Wal-Mart, I cried. I allowed my tears to flow as I looked at the decorations. True they were pretty. In fact, some were very nice. But as I walked the Christmas section looking for inspiration to teach my kids in my Sunday school class about Jesus, my eyes saw no angels, no nativity scenes. All I saw were penguins, snowmen, Santa Clauses – but no Jesus. As the sadness consumed me, I asked Jesus, “Has it gotten so bad they have forgotten You?” The answer I received was a greater sadness to meet my own.

Where did the reason for the season go? Where in the hustle and bustle that seems to start before Halloween did we lose the real meaning of Thanksgiving and Jesus’ birth? Where did it all go? Did we as Christians allow it to disappear? Did we allow time and change to destroy Christ in Christmas? Could we have done anything to stop it even if we had tried? I don’t have the answers. All I have is the sadness of my soul that won’t let go. My spirit cries out that we must change this.

We ask God to bless America, but we can’t even remember His Son’s birthday. Sure I know those of us that are Christians celebrate in our homes and in our churches, but we can’t let others forget the reason why. We can’t turn a blind eye and pretend we don’t see there are no more nativity scenes. We can’t turn a deaf ear while our kids learn “Here Comes Santa Claus” and are not allowed to sing “Away in a Manger.” Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with penguins, snowmen and Santa Clauses, but when we allow them to overshadow and even take the place of Jesus then yes, something is wrong – definitely wrong. Sure we can point fingers and say it’s not our fault; it’s the government or someone else’s fault. But the truth of the matter is point one finger at someone else and there is still the other fingers pointing at ourselves.

Again I don’t have the answers. All I have is the why of my sadness as I beg Jesus for forgiveness for allowing this to happen. So with sadness within I stand tall and proud and humbled in God’s love and say JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON and let us never, ever forget that!

*~*~*~*~

Thank you, Cheri, for expressing so powerfully the sadness in my heart and for giving me permission to post this. Father, please bring our nation back to You.

Yes, it’s been far too long since I blogged! I’ve been focused on mopping up the Colorado Christian Writers Conference (click here for a CD order form) and my garden and my house that are sorely neglected during conference season.

It’s time (okay, I admit past-time) to focus on the July 31 – August 3 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference (GPCWC). Some “News You Can Use” whether or not you’re able to come to the conference (although I hope you’ll prayerfully consider coming):

Looking for an agent? – This year’s GPCWC has five agents on faculty! Two are new agents with established firms: Sally Apokedak with the Leslie H. Stobbe Literary Agency and Ruth Samsel with William K. Jensen Literary. Now is a good time to check out the genres they are interested in representing before their stable of clients is filled. You’ll find info at http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/AgentsOthers.

Appointments – Of course, the very best way to land an agent is through meeting with them at a conference, and GPCWC offers more opportunities than most conferences for one-on-one appointments. And good news! Because we have such a large faculty this year, not just the first 75 conferees to register but the first 150 conferees will receive an additional appointment. Also, since I know it’s not possible for everyone to come to the entire conference, all who are among the first 150 to register will receive an additional appointment. That means:

One day conferees – Two appointments

Two day conferees – Three appointments

Three day conferees – In addition to the bonus appointment
for coming all three days (Thursday through Saturday),
will receive an additional appointment for a total of
FIVE 15-minute one-on-one appointments.

Keep in mind that the earlier you register, the better opportunity you have of getting your top picks. Bios and editorial needs for our 16 book editors and 13 periodical editors will be posted in the next few days. I’ll announce on the Facebook conference page when they are online.

CFOM June 2013

Encouragement and help for novelists – Check out the June issue of Bonnie Calhoun’s Christian Fiction Online Magazine. There is no charge to subscribe to this excellent resource that each month features 35+ columns by the best and brightest authors, publishers, and agents in Christian fiction.

Bonnie’s “Publisher’s Choice” this month is yours truly with an article that highlights the opportunities for novelists at this year’s conference. From Dr. Ted Baehr’s “Breakthrough Scriptwriting” and Tim Shoemaker’s “Take Your Fiction to the Gym” continuing sessions, two clinics, and numerous workshops this year’s GPCWC offers more than ever for both beginning and advanced novelists.

Scholarships – GPCWC is offering two 50% off scholarships to readers of Christian Fiction Online Magazine. But scholarships are not limited to CFOM readers. If you need scholarship help, you’ll find the application at http://philadelphia.writehisanswer.com/Scholarships.

Teens Write – You’ve heard the question: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! This year’s Teens Write answers a similar question: How do you write a novel/article, devotion, screenplay? One Word at a Time! Pam Halter has done a fantastic job putting together an exciting program taught by nine authors and editors for teens ages 12-18. For more info on the Thursday, August 1, all-day Teens Write click here Please ask Father if there is a teen He wants you to encourage to come and to mentor.

Let Freedom Ring” in our Churches– Important thoughts from Mike Huckabee in a five-minute video. I’ve chosen never to seek tax exempt status because I don’t want to be muzzled from speaking or writing His answer. And although I pack both the Greater Philly and Colorado Christian Writers Conferences with an outstanding faculty and tons of learning and networking opportunities, I will continue to offer special sessions that are not about the craft of writing or of selling/marketing/promoting our work but that instead focus on the critical issues of our day. If you’re coming to the GPCWC, please prayerfully consider tithing your conference time by attending one of the following two-hour Thursday specials or order the CD.

Prepare for Persecution with C. Hope Flinchbaugh
A Culture in Peril with Rick Marschall
Compassion, Justice, Advocacy with Steven Lawson

Father, I feel such a sense of urgency to “write Your answer” NOW, while the doors to print and distribute Christian literature and take full advantage of the Internet are still open. Help us not to hide our light under a bushel but to effectively and faithfully write what You’re calling us to write whether fiction or nonfiction, stories or articles, poetry or screenplays. Use each one of us, Father, to make a difference in the lives of our readers.

You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.
God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this,
as public as a city on a hill.
If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you
under a bucket, do you?
I’m putting you on a light stand.
Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!

Matthew 5:14-15 MSG

I had just given one of my Christian writers’ seminars in our nation’s capital. Many of the people who attended made commitments to write God’s answer. Fervently, I prayed for them and myself that we would be faithful to God’s call.

That evening, my hostess took me on a tour of the city. I had been to D.C. several times during the day but never at night. In the moonlight, the buildings were even more magnificent. But I was not an awestruck tourist taking in the sights. Rather, I began to grieve. It was as if God was showing me the heartbeat of my nation, and the heartbeat was weak.

As we left the city an hour later, we drove past the Lincoln Memorial. “Child, not one stone will be left standing on another,” I felt the Lord speak to my heart. Never have I been so aware of His presence, so sure of His voice. I wept for the city and for my nation.

“Are you sure it was the Lord?” people have asked me. “I wish I thought it wasn’t Him,” I’ve replied. Only time will tell. What I do know is that Jesus is coming—perhaps soon, perhaps in my lifetime and yours. And I’m reminded of Jesus’ words before He went to the cross. “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work” (John 9:4 NIV).

When I wrote this chapter in 1999, millennium fever had even non-Christians believing that history is moving to a climax. So many pieces of the end-times puzzle were falling into place—even more so today thirteen years later. World peace hangs by a slender thread as North Korea threatens to launch missiles, Syria is engaged in a brutal civil war, and Iran continues to threaten to wipe Israel off the map.

Financially our nation is teetering on the brink of collapse. Morally we’re in a free fall. The persecution of Christians is intensifying, and technology now exists for the mark of the beast.

I am not about to set a date for the Lord’s return or pretend to be an eschatologist. Most of Revelation and Daniel remain a mystery to me. I’ve read a couple of end-times novels and really don’t care to read more. The scenario of what may be right around the corner could make for sleepless nights, especially since I don’t know whether the Rapture will be pretribulation, midtribulation, or post tribulation. My gut-level feeling is that God isn’t going to zap us out of the dark days that are coming when the light of Christ’s love will be most desperately needed. But I may be wrong. So may the pre-trib crowd. Again, only God knows.

Even Jesus said, “No one knows the date and hour when the end will be—not even the angels. No, nor even God’s Son. Only the Father knows” (Matt. 24:36 TLB).

So what do we know in these days of uncertainty? Where do we find security if the nest egg we may have been able to accumulate was wiped out in the recession or a prolonged period of unemployment? How do we let our light shine in the encroaching darkness?

“Be prepared, for you don’t know what day your Lord is coming” (Matt. 24:42 TLB). Just as no one expected (at least I certainly didn’t) that the USSR would collapse or the Berlin Wall crumble, the Lord’s coming will be just as unexpected. “The world will be at ease—banquets and parties and weddings—just as it was in Noah’s time before the sudden coming of the flood; people wouldn’t believe what was going to happen until the flood actually arrived and took them all away. So shall my coming be,” Jesus said (Matt. 24:37-39 TLB). We need to live in a state of expectancy rather than allow ourselves to be lulled into complacency or a business-as-usual, laid-back approach to the work of ministry.

“Stay true to the Lord,” the apostle Paul wrote from a Roman prison (Phil. 4:1 TLB). If we are to proclaim truth to our dying world, it is critically important that we understand what truth is. More than ever before, we need to be grounded in His Word, so if it were to be taken from us, it would, indeed, be buried deep in our hearts. Not only do we need to know the truth, we need to be committed to the truth, regardless the price tag. Now is not the time to compromise, not the time to bow the knee to any other god than the Lord Jesus Christ. No matter how harmless it may seem to “bend just a little” so as not to offend, not to be seen as a fanatic, we must never forget that Jesus said, “I am the Way—yes, and the Truth and the Life. No one can get to the Father except by means of me” (John 14:6 TLB).

Let not your heart be troubled,” Jesus said. “You are trusting God, now trust in me” (John 14:1 TLB). Even though the world as we have known it may seem to be spinning out of control, we need to remember that none of what is happening is taking God by surprise. He is still in control! He is “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End” (Rev. 21:6 NIV). And despite the turmoil around us, He promises the gift of peace of mind and heart (see John 14:27). We do not need to fear nor be consumed by worry. He has promised not to abandon us or leave us as “orphans in the storm” (John 14:18).

Yes, the future seems frightening. The unknown strikes fear in many people. But as Christians, we do not need to get caught up in dire doomsday predictions. We know how it all ends! “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God” (Rev. 19:1 NIV). We can and must “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (Heb. 10:23 NIV). In His strength, and through His power, we can lay aside all of our self-doubts and feelings of inadequacy and boldly “write His answer.”

Responding to God’s Call to Write

Read the letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3, asking the Lord to speak to you and strengthen you for the work He is calling you to do.

I received an exciting email from Ted Baehr who is keynoting and teaching a continuing session on “Breakthrough Scriptwriting” at the July 31 – August 3 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference.

“Be a part of making Christ’s Voice heard in Hollywood,” Ted writes.”You can change the culture by changing the channel to Hallmark Movie Channel March 6th at 7 pm EST [for the 21st Annual MovieGuide Awards]. . . . We need to show Hollywood that the Christian voice matters, so that they make more faith and family friendly programing.”

Please help not just by tuning in but by spreading the word in church tomorrow and on Facebook, Twitter . . .

Speaking of television, in case you haven’t heard, tomorrow night (Sunday, March 3), THE BIBLE, an epic 5-week, 10-hour mini-series, will premiere on the History Channel (8 pm EST). The final episode will air on Easter Sunday and will feature the death and resurrection of Jesus. To help insure accuracy, many Christian scholars served as advisors and hundreds of Christian leaders have given their endorsement. Again, it’s critically important that we spread the word, tune to the History Channel, send a thank you to the channel (and sponsors), and most of all PRAY.

More news – my good friend Dan Wooding who keynoted at the 2011 GPCWC and the 2012 Colorado Christian Writers Conference emailed that he is “very close to receiving a matching grant from a Christian foundation that said they would give ASSIST a grant of $5,000 to be used to help us continue with our media ministry, if we can raise enough funds to match this figure. This means that a gift of any amount, large or small, that is given will be doubled in value, which would be a wonderful help for us with our funds still extremely low at this time. . . . This is a wonderful way to assist ASSIST, which, by the way, stands for Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times.”

I believe ASSIST News provides a critically important ministry by keeping subscribers informed (there is no charge) of the needs of our brothers and sisters around the world who are refusing to deny their faith in Christ despite persecution. To use ASSIST’s secure site to designate your gift for “Where Needed Most”, please go to http://www.assistnews.net/assist/donations.htm. Or you can mail a check with “Matching Grant” in the memo field to ASSIST, PO Box 609, Lake Forest, CA 92609, USA. Gifts are tax-deductible. Please pray about helping.

Contrasts

Thanksgiving again ushers in
the Christmas season.
I am sobered
not so much by the calories I’ll consume
or the prices in the mall
(although both are too high)
but by the contrasts I see.
There is plenty and want,
joy and grief,
love and hatred,
hope and despair,
the real and the artificial.
Father, please help me to see You
and to share Your love.
Move me to give as Your Son gave
when He willingly went
from the manger to the Cross.
Let there be a difference in me
that is visible and credible—
that points others to Jesus Christ,
who came and is coming again!
