new deck
“Relax,
everything’s going to be all right;
rest, everything’s coming together”
(Jude 1:2 MSG).

I discovered the above paraphrase of Jude 1:2 after five exhausting days of refinishing my back deck. Despite 90 degree weather, I pushed myself to finish a job that needed to get done. We stained the deck two years ago only to have the finish begin to peel less than a year later. We couldn’t afford to hire a contractor, and my husband couldn’t help because he tripped over a cord in the driveway and sprained his hand two weeks ago. He’s in a cast that he is supposed to remove only to take a shower.

It’s a job that would have been difficult for someone 30 years younger than me. (I’ll be 70 in January.) Lessons learned:

  • Count the cost. Jesus said, “Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn’t first sit down and figure the cost so you’ll know if you can complete it?” (Luke 14:28 MSG). The job did turn out to be more costly than I anticipated – and not just in dollars and cents. It’s all too easy for me to get in over my head. You, too?
  •  Ask for help. “Tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers” (Phil. 4:6 TLB). Because God works through people, I also needed to let my daughter and her husband know that I really needed their help. Thank You, Father, that they did not ignore my cry for help.
  •  Rely on His strength. My own strength would never have enabled me to finish. “He gives me new strength,” Psalm 23:2 (TLB) promises. He also “lets me rest in the meadow grass and leads me beside the quiet streams.” I admit in my desire to finish I didn’t pace myself as well as I needed to, but I did go to bed earlier at night and sleep later in the morning. It was much-needed rest that has included a nap this Sunday afternoon on my lovely new deck!
  •  And more learned-the-hard-way lessons – After four days of sanding off the old finish, I will never again use stain or paint on the deck or a stripper to try and remove it. I used Thompson’s Natural Advanced Water Seal. It’s supposed to last three years – I hope!

Update July 30 – August 2 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference

Reminder – The price increases July 2 so register now.

Another reminder – Clinic applications are due July 1.

Teens Write info is finally online (click here). Thanks Pam Halter for the great program you’ve put together for our teens.

Faculty Bios and Editorial Needs – With 58 on faculty this was a time consuming task. Unexplained techno glitches didn’t help. The same as with the Teens Write page, I lost my updates to the Authors page and had to begin again several times. Then, when the Authors page was finally uploaded, I discovered that it had somehow copied over the Paid Critiques page. God bless Jonathan Shank at SKWD (my webmaster) who was able to recover the information. Jonathan will teach a workshop at the conference on “Effective, Efficient, Engaging Websites.” I am so grateful Father led me to SKWD two years ago.

Friday Special

There has never been a society in the history of mankind
whose moral values
have deteriorated so dramatically,
in such a short period of time,
as those of Americans in the last 50 years.
And so far it shows no sign of stopping.

Bert M. Farias, “The American Church – How Deceived Are We?”

The above quote from a June 1 Prophecy News Watch article is sobering and cause for deep concern. I encourage you to click here to read the entire article. I clearly felt Father speaking to my heart as I read this article that I needed to invite Rick Marschall to come and teach the following special session on Friday from 1:00 – 2:00 (during the Indie Publishing Panel). It is open to the community free of charge.

Save Our Children – Christians are pilgrims and strangers in this world. Surely every believer senses that these times are darker, more dangerous than ever. Our culture has turned hateful toward Christians and children are the primary targets of the enemy. There are things we can and must do as Christians. Let us engage!

Rick has 74 books and hundreds of magazine articles to his credit. A former political cartoonist, editor of Marvel Comics, and writer for Disney, his fields as an author are as eclectic: popular culture; classical music; country music; biographies; television history; children’s books; cartoons and comics; and Christian books, where his publishers have included Thomas Nelson, Faithwords, and Tyndale House. For four years he has produced the weekly blog www.MondayMinistry.com, devotionals that feature music videos and address culture, worldview, church history, and matters of faith.

Office post CCWCWhen my heart is faint and overwhelmed,
lead me to the mighty, towering Rock of safety.
Psalm 61:2 TLB

Monday mornings are challenging and overwhelming! And so is mopping up one conference and working to launch another. Well the Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference was launched April 1 when online registration opened, and the brochure has been off press for about six weeks. Still, when I look at my to-do list and the chaos in my office it’s hard to know where to start. And so, I’m choosing to pray and to praise – and to move my office to the back porch!

Sing praises over everything,New Office June 2
any excuse for a song
to God the Father
in the name of our Master,
Jesus Christ.
Eph. 5:20 MSG

Thank You, Father, for reminding me to praise You in all things. And thank You that what overwhelms me doesn’t overwhelm You. WITH You nothing is impossible.

This is a large work
I’ve called you into,
but don’t be overwhelmed by it.
It’s best to start small.

July 30 – August 2 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference

If you’ve emailed me and I’ve not yet answered, I’m hoping to get caught up on the backlog of emails this week.

Clinics – Applications will be online in the next couple of days. And what an exciting line-up of clinics we have this year:

Advanced Fiction Intensive with Nancy Rue
Nonfiction Book Prroposals with David Fessenden
Get Them Coming to Your Blog?Website with Megan Breedlove

Updating the conference website is high on my list of priorities this week including the addition of faculty bios and editorial needs. Once that is added, the Appointment Request Form will be available to those who have registered. As long as the form is submitted to us online by July 10, your appointments will be booked in the order that you registered.

Bonus appointment – Because I’ve been focused on the Colorado conference, I’ve not been sending updates on the Philly conference. Therefore, I suspect the May 31 deadline for the early registration discount caught many of you by surprise. I’m unable to change the date on the online registration form and the form printed in the brochure, but I will give everyone who registers through this Saturday, June 7, an additional free appointment.

Possible And Impossible Keys Show Optimism And Positivity“With God everything is possible.” Mark 10:27 TLB

I’ve been part of Christian publishing for about thirty-five years. In the early days I used a Selectric typewriter and submitted (and resubmitted) my manuscripts via the USPS. It took six to eighteen months for accepted manuscripts to get in print. (I’ve sold over 1,0o0 articles, stories, poems, and devotionals and have had nine books published.)

Today it sometimes still takes many long months and even years to get our work in print, but computers and the Internet have definitely speeded up the rest of  the process – God’s provision, I believe, because of the critical need to write and publish His answer while there is still time. Now we literally can reach the world from our desktop through blogs and websites and the publication of our work in online magazines or as eBooks or POD books.

It’s an awesome time to be a writer, but one thing has not changed. In order to impact the lives of our readers, we need to write with excellence.

I have given my Write His Answer Seminar over 50 times, coast to coast. God has used it to launch hundreds of writing ministries and to grow the ministries of those who are already writing for publication.

Friday evening, June 6, and Saturday, June 7 from 8:30 – 5:00 I will present this seminar at Faith Discovery Church, 33 Brass castle Road, Washington, NJ. If you’re planning to come to the July 29 – August 2 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference, the Write His Answer Seminar is great preparation for meeting with agents and editors. If distance or your schedule prohibits you from coming, the seminar is available on CD. You can order the entire seminar or portions from my online bookstore for writers at http://writehisanswer.com/bookstore.

Here are some of the topics I cover:

  • How to get started in the ministry of writing. Personal and spiritual preparation.
  • An overview of the Christian market and the best opportunities.
  • The ministry potential of self-publishing and writing for the secular market.
  • How to turn your personal experiences into print. Seven essential elements of a personal experience story and pitfalls to avoid.
  • How to find, capture, organize, evaluate, and sharpen your ideas.
  • Using a Writer’s Check-off List.
  • Making a good impression on an editor.
  • Writing effective query and cover letters.
  • Knowing your rights and the editor’s rights.
  • An overview of the needs of the Christian market and best opportunities.
  • How to write devotionals, articles, fiction, profiles, fillers, humor, and poetry that will sell and touch lives.
  • How to pass the “So what?” test.
  • How to effectively market your work and use a market analysis chart.
  • How to overcome procrastination.
  • How to deal with the D’s (disappointment, doubt, and discouragement) and rise above rejection.
  • The importance of prayerfully setting specific and measurable goals.

Each session has a biblical focus and is hemmed in by prayer. Friday evening includes a critique session where portions of as many manuscripts as possible will be read. Even if you do not have a manuscript to be critiqued, you will learn principles you can apply to your own writing.

It’s not too late to register. Go to www.jewellutt.com and click on “Events: Calling All Writers” for more information.

Father, for such a time as this I know You are calling and equipping an army of writers to “write Your answer.” I praise You that you are able to do “far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of – infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes” (Eph. 3:20 TLB).

Thank you for your outstanding seminar!
The feedback has been tremendous in terms of your expertise,
your helpfulness, and your love for our Lord.
People especially enjoyed the frequent times of prayer.
You are a blessing wherever you go.

10-1113tm-vector2-3103Do you put off doing things because you don’t believe you can do them? Do you have half-written manuscripts waiting to be finished? What about ideas that you’ve tucked away – somewhere? Are you putting off registering for the Colorado Christian Writers Conference or the  Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference because you’re uncertain that you have what it takes to get in print?

Yes, procrastination is a very real foe, but I am convinced the real reason we procrastinate is because we don’t believe we can do something. And actually, that’s true! We need God’s enabling to do the work He calls us to do. The key is knowing what He is calling us to do. The Living Bible paraphrase of Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do everything God asks me to do with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power.”

It comes down to faith – to believing in the One who calls us and choosing to say “yes, Lord, here am I.”Dream%20With%20Me_album%20cover

I want to encourage you to read aloud the “Writer’s Statement of Faith” below. You may need to read it aloud several times a day. I know I do! I also want to encourage you to watch this video of pre-teen Jackie Evancho singing “To Believe.” Yes, Father, help us to believe that we really can make a difference and bring peace – Your peace – to our troubled world.

A Writer’s Statement of Faith

I have strength for all things in Christ Who Empowers me-I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength in me, [that is, I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]. Phil. 4:13 AMP

Are you called to help others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies, so that God will be glorified. 1 Pet. 4:11 TLB

[Not in my own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in me – energizing and creating in me the power and desire – both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. Phil. 2:13 AMP

My strength must come from the Lord’s mighty power at work within me. Eph. 6:10 TLB

In Him in every respect I am enriched, in full power and readiness of speech (to speak of my faith), and complete knowledge and illumination (to give me full insight into its meaning). 1 Cor. 1:5 AMP

Now I have every grace and blessing; every spiritual gift and power for doing His will are mine during this time of waiting for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 1:7 TLB

I actually do have within me a portion of the very thoughts and mind of Christ. 1 Cor. 2:16 TLB

I can be a mirror that brightly reflects the glory of the Lord. 2 Cor. 3:18 TLB

I will commit everything I do to the Lord. I will trust Him to help me do it and He will. Ps. 37:5 TLB

I will lean on, trust and be confident in the Lord with all my heart and mind, and choose not to rely on my own insight or understanding. Prov. 3:5 AMP

I will commit my work to the Lord, then it will succeed. Prov. 16:3 TLB

Sharing Christ is my work, and I can do it only because Christ’s mighty energy is at work within me. Col. 1:29 TLB

I will be strong and courageous and get to work. I will not be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with me; He will not forsake me. He will see to it that everything is finished correctly. 1 Chron. 28:20 TLB

I need to keep on patiently doing God’s will if I want Him to do for me all He promised. Heb. 10:36 TLB

I m convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in me will continue until the day of Jesus Christ – right up to the time of His return – developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in me. Phil. 1:6 AMP

His mighty power at work within me is able to do far more than I would every dare to ask or even dream of – infinitely beyond my highest prayers, desires, thoughts or hopes. Eph. 3:20 TLB

Writers for Such a Day as ThisWHA logo on Shaw guides

By Becca Anderson
Special to ASSIST News Service

ESTES PARK, CO(ANS) — It used to be that restrictions on sharing one’s Christian faith or writing and speaking freely about matters of faith were things that happened on the other side of the globe. Increasingly today, North American Christians find themselves muffled by politically correct demands on their speech.

The Colorado Christian Writers Conference, May 14-17 at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO, will challenge and train writers to take a strong biblical stand on the issues that confront our culture. The restriction on Christians to share what they feel compelled to speak and write about is no longer limited to “over there.” Writers increasingly put their very lives at risk around the world to bring the message of Christ to others. Every day in the United States and Canada, people are censored, jobs are lost, and legal action is threatened when the Christian message is shared. One answer is to cease to write and speak this vital message. The other answer is to continue to be bold, with improved skills and added determination.

“I feel a sense of urgency to encourage and equip Christians to ‘write His answer’ – now,” said conference director Marlene Bagnull. “I believe the day is fast approaching when we will not have the freedom to print or distribute Christian literature or to share our faith on the Internet. We need to be aware, and ready to take advantage of every media to get our message out as the ‘signs of the times’ become more apparent.”

In addition to a full schedule of 62 workshops covering all aspects of writing, eight continuing sessions, panel discussions, hands-on clinics, appointments with editors and agents, and general sessions, the conference also includes a special session on Compassion, Justice, and Advocacy. The topic is taught by Steven Lawson, a freelance writer, editor, writing coach and publishing consultant with a long career in Christian publishing. “The Christian writer is uniquely qualified to address many issues that confront every citizen today. Human trafficking, orphans, abortion, racism, the poor and hungry, the oppressed, and much more that is close to the heart and call of Jesus,” he said.

Writing well on topics of vital interest and importance to society as a whole is a valuable way for Christians to bring the message of Christ back into the marketplace of ideas. Offering real answers -His answers – to these perplexing issues takes courage, quality writing, and a sensitive heart. Lawson speaks to the issues and shows writers how to plug their passion for social justice into meaningful efforts.

Building on the theme of reaching the world through Christian writing, one of the keynotes addresses the sobering topic of “Write His Answer. Despite Opposition,” presented by Peter Lundell, pastor and author of Armed for the Battle. “Writers are on the front lines of an intensifying spiritual war,” he said. “We have an adversary who wants us to feel defeated. How do we silence his lies, which seem to be true, when our work is rejected and we feel overwhelmed with discouragement?” His presentation will answer those questions and leave attendees strengthened for the battle.

If you are a Christian writer who feels led to turn your words to the vast and urgent area of social justice and compassion advocacy, CCWC is a conference that could well launch you in a new direction with improved clarity on how to get the job done. Though April 15 was the deadline to register and still receive the greatest discount, if you mention that you saw this article through ASSIST News Service, you will receive the higher discount.

In my keynote at the Super Saturday sponsored by Lancaster Christian Writers Fellowship last Saturday I quoted Chuck Colson’s sobering words in Against the Night, Living in the New Dark Ages.

Sunset_Mountains_Worship_Background

“‘Dark Age’ is a strong term. I recognize that. Yet in recent years I’ve had a growing sense of storm clouds gathering on the horizon . . .  The forecast is foreboding . . . We scan the horizon with unease.

“We sense that things are winding down, that somehow freedom, justice, and order are slipping away. Our great civilization may not yet lie in smoldering ruins, but the enemy is within the gates.

“The times seem to smell of sunset. Encroaching darkness casts long shadows across every institution in our land. . . . We do face a crisis in Western culture, and it presents the greatest threat to civilization since the barbarians invaded Rome.”

I feel such a strong sense of urgency to “write His answer” – now. I believe the day is fast approaching when we will not have the freedom to print or distribute Christian literature or to share our faith on the Internet. Father, please open our eyes to the “signs of the time” and help us to “Make the most of every chance [we] get. These are desperate times!” (Eph. 5:16 MSG).

Today, April 15, is the last day to register for the May  14-17 Colorado Christian Writers Conference before the price increases.  Because I believe Father will use this conference powerfully, I am praying you will seriously consider coming.

Michael Gantt, a pastor from Vermont who keynoted some years back, said something I’ve never forgotten when he captured the heart of the conference in the video I just uploaded to the conference website. “It is very critical that you believe what God has to say is relevant to this generation,” he said. “It is very critical that you believe, that you believe, that God will use you to bring His message to the world.”

Please take 3-1/2 minutes to view the video at http://youtu.be/-qfhH5NH7XE.

Father, please help everyone who reads these words not to doubt You or the gift of words You have entrusted to them. Move mountains to get them to the mountain in Colorado May 14-17. I know You will meet us there.

Keep writing and living His answer!

eagle 3Please Lord, help us to find you once again and heal this once great nation.

Yesterday morning I had the privilege of keynoting at the Lancaster Christian Writers Fellowship Super Saturday. In “Get the Word Out” I talked about the urgency I feel to “write His answer” – now, while we still have the freedom to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ. We cannot, we must not, compromise the fact that Jesus said “I am the Way – yes, and the Truth and the Life. No one can get to the Father except by means of me” (John 14:6 TLB).

Today we remember how Jesus rode into Jerusalem as the crowds cheered, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Yet less than a week later they shouted “Crucify him!”

None of this caught Jesus by surprise. Indeed, we’re told in Hebrews 12:2 (TLB) that “He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterwards.”

Have you stopped to consider that you are the reason for His joy?

Years ago my pastor’s wife told me that if I was the only person on this earth, Jesus still would have come and died just for me.

We know that He is coming again but that He tarries because He does not want even one to be lost. And so He is calling you, He is calling me, to “Get His Word Out.” An outline of my message – really a Bible study – is available online. I hope you’ll download it and make time to prayerfully consider these passages as you ask how He wants to use you to share His love with those who do not know He loved them enough to go to the cross.

Clinics – There is still room in the Fiction Intensive, Speakers’ Clinic, and Get Them Coming to Your Blog/Website Clinic so we’ve extended the deadline until the clinics are filled. My friend, Sue Cameron, a gifted speaker, took Roy Hanschke’s Speakers’ Clinic a couple of years ago. She says,

It’s often said that writing and speaking go hand in hand.
That’s why I’m grateful that CCWC offered Roy’s Speakers’ Clinic.
Roy is a dynamic example of “show don’t tell” as he actually demonstrates
different methods of effective communication.
Each participant had the opportunity to try out Roy’s suggestions
in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.
We learned from each other
and went home with a notebook full of useful instructions
on how to become a more skillful communicator.

Compassion rocks fixed

Are you concerned
about human trafficking,
orphans, abortion, the poor,
racism, the handicapped,
the hungry, the oppressed,
and so much more that is close to
the heart and call of Jesus?

Maybe your concerns are closer to home –
a family member who doesn’t know the Lord,
relationships that are strained,
even estranged,
not enough money to meet urgent needs,
and not enough faith to tackle issues
that seem beyond us to resolve.

Today I want to challenge you, and to challenge myself
to believe that we can make a difference.

Dream%20With%20Me_album%20cover

I’ve just watched – again – the video of pre-teen Jackie Evancho singing “I Believe” that now has 4,628,546 hits on youtube. Amazing voice – powerful message. I encourage you to watch it and to believe. God has a plan for you and for your writing. He can use you and use me to make a difference in our hurting world. And grab hold of His promises in “A Writer’s Statement of Faith.” Read them aloud. Choose to believe He means what He says. He who calls you will equip you to do “far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us” (Eph. 3:20 MSG).

Discouraged face

Yesterday was one of those days when I identified with the Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:8, “We’re frustrated, but we don’t give up” (GW). Not that my exasperation with technology and techs that didn’t speak clear English can compare with all Paul endured to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ – still, not being able to send email was incredibly frustrating and a problem that had to be resolved. Thank You, Father, that I’m able to send email again – that You helped me not to give up.

The temptation to give up is one everyone – and especially writers – will face. Whether its words that are not coming together, discouragement with trying to get our work in print, or poor reviews and disappointing sales of a book that finally did get published, it’s not easy being a writer. I think it’s even harder when we’re writing out of a strong sense that this is what God has called us to do.

Disappointments, doubts, discouragement – I call them the deadly Ds – are weapons the evil one effectively uses to get our eyes off the Lord and the call to “write His answer.”

As I have watched Father’s plan for the May 14-17 Colorado Christian Writers Conference come together, I am awed by how the keynotes and continuing sessions reflect His heart to encourage us not to give up. I know He is going to meet us on the mountain and that the fellowship we will share with Him and with other writers, editors, and agents will be life-changing.

Online registration opens at 12:01 am EST, Saturday, February 1. That’s 10:01 pm today, January 31, in Colorado. The brochure that is now at the printer is online at http://colorado.writehisanswer.com/brochure along with lots of other info (and more to come). The first five online registrations will receive a free copy of my book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers.

Father, thank You for loving us and calling us to make a difference through the words we write and the lives we live.

Procrastination is a sin;
it brings me endless sorrow.
I know I should stop doing it.
I think I’ll start tomorrow!

No doubt you’ve seen this poem or something similar. I checked the Internet to attribute it and found 4,390 entries! Obviously procrastination is a hot topic that, like the old game of hot potato, we quickly toss (pass the blame) to someone or something else. Really, isn’t it easier to blame someone else for causing us to procrastinate or to move to another task to avoid doing the thing(s) we know we need to do?

While no one is immune from procrastination, I think writers are especially prone. I’m not pointing an accusing finger at you – I’m pointing it at myself. Despite the chapter on “Overcoming Procrastination” that I wrote for my book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writers, I struggle with procrastination as much or perhaps more than others. How else could I have written that chapter? I’m an expert! If you’re curious about what I’m learning (but sadly not always applying), click here to read the chapter online.

I especially struggle with procrastination when it comes to planning the Colorado and Greater Philly Christian Writers Conferences. I know Father has entrusted these conferences to me. Watching Him work and do Ephesians 3:20 things each year (it’s now 31 years for Philly and 17 for Colorado) is one of my greatest joys. It’s just the getting started that’s hard. Well, okay, the entire process is hard! I know I’ll face computer challenges and overwhelming to-do lists and time pressures that will stretch me far beyond my abilities, my limited IQ (it’s amazing how stupid my computer can make me feel), my wisdom, my strength . . .

And that’s the problem! I procrastinate when I focus on me – on my self-doubts and feelings of inadequacy rather than trusting the Lord to enable me to do what I can never do on my own. Although the world says dependency on anyone or anything but ourselves is weakness, like the apostle Paul I’d rather embrace my weaknesses knowing that “when I am weak, then I am strong – the less I have, the more I depend on him” (2 Cor. 12:10 TLB). God-confidence is far better than self-confidence!

Will you ask the Lord what He wants you to do – to write – this year? And will you then commit to do it in His strength and for His glory?

P.S. The website for the May 14-17 Colorado Christian Writers Conference is now updated with the 2014 faculty and continuing sessions. Lots more info coming soon. The website for the July 30-August 2 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference still has 2013 info but I can tell you that Cec Muphey will be on faculty. I hope you’ll visit again, pass the URL on to friends, and save the date! There’s still lots of work to do but as Aristotle said, “Well begun is half done.” I’m excited and hope you will be too.
