The August 10-13 GPCWC is the place to be if you’re writing a nonfiction book!

Dave Fessenden, Senior Editor/Acquisitions at CLC Publications is offering the hands-on help you need in his Nonfiction Books Clinic. Based on his new book, Writing the Christian Nonfiction Book: Concept to Contract, the clinic focuses on eight steps every book author must take to be successfully published. Merging practical advice with spiritual counsel, the emphasis will be on the inspirational impact of the author’s material. The clinic is limited to 10 serious writers and will meet during the six hour-long workshops. The prerequisite is a nonfiction book in-progress or completed and a teachable spirit. You will find more information and  the clinic application (due by email no later than July 16) at www.writehisanswer.com/Philadelphia/2011_clinics.htm.

Terry Whalin, author of more than 60 nonfiction books who is also serving on the faculty, says,”I resonated with Fessenden’s insight and instruction which are mixed with humor and honesty. He is a skilled communicator who has written Christian nonfiction books and guided other authors as a book editor. That experience shines in these pages.” Terry generously shares his publishing know-how in his blog, The Writing Life. I highly recommend that you subscribe. He also will be teaching four workshops at the conference including “Nonfiction Book Creation.” Through step-by-step instruction you’ll learn how to determine the big picture for a book project and how to use storyboarding techniques. There are five more workshops in the Nonfiction track plus workshops in the Get Published, Marketing, Writer’s Life, and Craft tracks nonfiction writers will find helpful.

GPCWC is offering a six-hour continuing session on Nonfiction Books taught by Craig Bubeck, Editorial Director for Wesleyan Publishing House. “Do you want to write nonfiction that will impact lives for the kingdom?” he asks. Beginning with a biblical examination of why we write nonfiction, Craig will discuss the practical applications of translating truth into powerful and relevant nonfiction concepts and manuscripts that audiences will want to read.

At GPCWC you’ll also have the opportunity to meet with editors who publish nonfiction and agents who represent nonfiction authors. The sooner you register the more likely you’ll be able to get your top choices.

God bless you as you “write His answer.”

Bonnie Calhoun asked me to write a 1,000 word article about the August 10-13 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference for the July issue of her Christian Fiction Online Magazine. I’m always careful to follow guidelines, but once I got started writing about all the opportunities for novelists, I ended up with 1,400 words and I could have written a lot more.  Check it out at http://christianfictiononlinemagazine.com/home_publisher.html.

Bonnie puts together a great magazine each month. If you’re working on a novel, you need to subscribe so you don’t miss out on the wealth of info each month. It’s free! And you need to pray about coming to the conference in August. I’m offering two scholarships for 50% off the registration fee to CFOM readers.

Speaking of “free,” as we celebrate our freedom this 4th of July, let’s also ask the Lord to set us free from all that  enslaves us as a nation and individuals. I hope ou’ll make time to read and reflect on the passages in this Bible study about freedom. There’s so much Father wants to do in our lives if we will only let Him.

God bless you, and God bless America!

Whew! This evening I finished adding bios for 17 more faculty members under the broad Agents and Other category. From literary agent Les Stobbe who will draw from his 58 years of experience as a writer in his continuing session for Advanced Writers to Suzanne Kuhn, owner of an author events company who has traveled with Karen Kingsbury to her arena events, this year’s GPCWC is, I believe, the strongest yet.

Are you interested in devotional writing? Beth Patch, editor of CBN.com’s Daily Devotional which averages over 125,000 page views per month, will teach a workshop on “Devoted to You.” You’ll learn  the basics of writing inspiring and encouraging devotionals from the new material  life gives you every day. Beth’s workshop will include story selection and development, scripture choices, following writers’ guidelines, and  self-editing. Get an editor’s viewpoint on what works and what doesn’t.

Do you know you need a website to promote your book(s) and a blog so your voice can be heard, yet you’re afraid of the cost and the unknowns  of creating a website? Website designer Jerry Thompson will offer a two-hour Website Clinic on Wednesday and meet with you one-on-one during the conference. By the end of the conference you will have a website and blog designed by you and for you which can be edited as often as desired. And you’ll have tutorials and other resources available as you move forward.

Need an agent? Diana Flegal from Hartline Literary Agency also will be with us. Diana’s focus is nonfiction but she entertains well-written fiction as  well. She has a passion for getting great writers published, also venturing into the ABA market. More info about the kinds of books and authors she is  interested in representing is on the conference website. If you are uncertain about “How How to Write an Attention-Getting Proposal” you’ll  want to attend her workshop.

Do you know the difference between “Good vs. Great?” Nicole Resciniti, a literary agent with The Seymour Agency, will provide an in-depth analysis of what distinguishes an amazing manuscript from an average one. She’ll also provide tips on how to improve your current WIP with an eye toward making the material marketable. Nicole is currently accepting submissions and actively building her client list. Again, there’s more info on the conference website.

Today’s authors are expected to be more and more involved in getting the word out about their books. Does the thought of publicity overwhelm you? In her workshop, “Creating Buzz for Your Book,” publicist and writer’s coach and consultant Twila Belk will discuss simple, silly, and strategic ways to create buzz and help you come up with a plan that works for you. Got stage fright when it comes to meeting the public? Angela Breidenbach and Suzanne Kuhn will teach a workshop on Amazing Author Appearances.” From book signings to speaking events, learn how to manage the unforeseen and leap the avoidable potholes.

I could go on and on. If these 17 faculty members made up our entire faculty, it would be an amazing conference. But still to come are bios for 11 editors representing 16 periodicals and 24 authors in addition to the 17 book editors whose info I posted two days ago at www.writehisanswer.com/Philadelphia/2011_book_editors.htm.

Thank You, Father, for each faculty member and all the ways You will bless us through them.

In Him –

Today I received the June issue of the American Family Association Journal. The Statue of Liberty on the cover and headline, “The decay of  Greatness,” immediately grabbed my attention. The article ends with the sobering words, “Should Christians fail to be salt and light, they will surely experience the bitter sorrow of watching their society fall, just as the Athenians and Romans before them.”

Franklin Graham’s June newsletter contains a similar message. “Our nation today is in trouble,” he wrote. “We see moral decay spreading throughout the land. Our country is deteriorating rapidly, an ever-tightening spiral downward-financially, socially, and spiritually. America is decaying from within.

“The real problem is that as a nation we have turned our backs on God, removing Him from schools, businesses, and government, and unfortunately  many a family has taken God out of their home as well. If this country hopes to make it through the enormous crises we now face, if we want America to be a nation worth leaving to our grandchildren, we have to turn back to God.”

In the midst of growing hostility to Christ we must not be silent. For such a time as this I believe God is raising up an army of Christians to “Write His Answer.” He can use you to make a difference!  Whether you write fiction or nonfiction, for children or adults, the August 10-13 Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference will equip you to write about a God who is real, who is reachable, and who changes lives.

Now that I’m almost caught up with work from the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference and my veggie garden is planted I’ll be focusing on the Philly conference. Next week I’ll begin adding bios for our 68 faculty members and editorial needs to www.writehisanswer.com/Philadelphia. I’ll also be posting info about our Thursday, August 11, expanded Teens Write program. Today I posted some exciting updates and the application for the ten full scholarships covering the cost of registration that the Cec Murphey Foundation is providing. GPCWC also provides partial scholarships for those with financial need as well as time payments.

Remember, the sooner you register, the better opportunity you have to get your top choices for your free 15-minute appointments with faculty. And there’s still time to be among the first 100 to receive a  fifth appointment if you register for Thursday through Saturday.

I watched the Lord work in awesome ways in Colorado and I expect im to do even more in Philly as together we explore how to effectively Write His Answer” for such a time as this.

I have no doubt the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference will be a life-changing conference. From Bill Myer’s “Hearing His Answer” keynote Thursday morning through Bob Hostetler’s closing keynote, “A Writer’s Dream,” CCWC 2011 will encourage and equip you to write about a God who is real, who is reachable, and who changes lives. It is critical that we do exactly that whether through books, periodicals, or the Internet.

Through nonfiction and the power of story we can “Write His Answer in an Age of Opposition” as Liz Babbs from Great Britain will challenge us in her Thursday evening keynote. William Agius from Mission International will speak from first-hand experience of the “Works of God in the Middle East” on Friday morning. That evening four members of the faculty will briefly address the need to “Write His Answer to the Issues that Concern Us” followed by round tables. Saturday morning Rusty Wright from The Amy Foundation will talk about “Advocacy Apologetics: Finding Common Ground.”

As I listen to the news, I can’t help but wonder how much longer we will have the freedom to print and distribute Christian literature. I am convinced that NOW is the time to “Write His Answer.” The sense of urgency I feel is underscored by Wednesday’s news that Shahbaz Bhatti, the Minister of Minorities in Pakistan and the only Christian on the cabinet, was martyred. If you read my previous  blog, you know that he spoke at the Philly conference about ten years ago. Daily I hear about Christian brothers and sisters around the world who are being persecuted or martyred for their faith, but this is the first time I personally know someone who has paid the ultimate price.

In a video prior to his assassination Shahbaz said, “I want to share that I believe in Jesus Christ who has given His own life for us. I know what is the meaning of cross. And I am following of the cross” (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12617562).

We will “Focus on the Cross” in CCWC’s Wednesday evening opening session with Sister Hope, a friend of Shahbaz who has written three must-read articles about him at www.assistnews.net

Please join me in praying for Shahbaz’ mother and for the Christians in Pakistan. And pray for our witness as Christians here in America. I visited the Belief blog on CNN Wednesday (http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/02/critic-of-pakistan-blasphemy-law-shot-and-killed/#comments) and was appalled by the comments. “Ohhhh, I bet there’s a LOT of christians who wish they could make blasphemy laws here in the U.S.  Christian Sharia Law, here we come!” one person said.

My heart cries out, “Oh that we might write and live Your answer.”

“A picture,” someone has said, “is worth a thousand words.” No wonder writers are encouraged to “show don’t tell.”

I hope you’ll visit www.writehisanswer.com/Colorado and click on the video welcome to the Colorado Christian Writers Conference. In addition to the pictures are words from former conferees and faculty. No matter how many times I’ve watched the video (and I have watched it many times), I continue to be stirred by the words of Michael Gantt, a pastor from Vermont, in Chapter 4 of the video. “It’s very critical,” he said, “that you believe that what God has to say is relevant to this situation. It’s very critical that you – that you believe God will use you to write His message to the world.”

In the midst of the rejection slips that are part of a writer’s life, it can be difficult to believe that God will use us. That’s not surprising. Discouragement is one of the evil one’s most effective weapons. But I challenge you, as my dear friend and mentor, Lee Roddy, challenged me years ago, “Whose voice are you going to listen to?”

“Now glory be to God who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of – infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes” (Eph. 3:20 TLB).

Spring is coming, or so the groundhog says.  Whether he’s right that we’ll have an early spring remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – spring will come!

Even more certain is God’s promise in Hosea 6:3: “Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him, and he will respond to us as surely as the coming of dawn or the rain of early spring” (TLB). But did you read the condition? Are you pressing in to know Him and, as one who has been given the gift of words, are you pressing on to make Him known?

If you’re feeling stuck in a long, cold winter of your soul when God seems distant and a season when your writing appears to be going nowhere, take heart. “Even when we are too weak to have any faith left, he remains faithful to us and will help us, for he cannot disown us who are part of himself, and he will always carry out his promises to us” (2 Tim. 2:13 TLB). And what does He promise? Romans 11:29 says “God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn” (TLB). He also promises that “Now you have every grace and blessing; every spiritual gift and power for doing his will are yours during this time of waiting for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:7 TLB).

A promise that kept me writing and submitting when my first book kept getting rejected is Galatians 6:9. “Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up” (TLB). That book was finally accepted after being returned 42 times over a five year period. (I learned not to use the word “rejected.”) Had I given up, I would have missed the joy of encouraging others through my book, Write His Answer – A Bible Study for Christian Writer; the joy of the six other books that followed; and the joy of directing the Greater Philly and Colorado Christian Writers Conference.

We’re picking up 8,000 brochures today for the May 11-14 Colorado Christian Writers Conference. If you’re not on our mailing list, please email me to receive the 16-page brochure. The August 10-13 Greater Philly conference is well along in the planning stages. And I’ve expanded my online bookstore for writers – finally. Through February 28 I’m offering an additional 10% off the already discounted prices including Sally Stuart’s 2011 Christian Writers Market Guide making the price for the new edition only $18. I hope you’ll visit www.writehisanswer.com/bookstore.htm.

But Father, most of all I pray that Your people will be encouraged to “write Your answer” during these critical days. Help us all to be faithful to our calling.

Because of Christ – Marlene

Will this be the year that the hopes and dreams you have for your writing are realized? Ecclesiastes 5:7 says, “Dreaming instead of doing is foolishness, and there is ruin in a flood of empty words” (TLB). Therefore, at the beginning of a new year it’s wise to ask ourselves, “What am I going to do to make it happen?”

There is no better way to begin the new year or each new day than to “press on to know the Lord” (Hos. 6:3 TLB). Only through waiting on Him (Hab. 2:1) will we know what He is calling us to write and be encouraged and equipped to persevere.Just as we need to “go on growing in the Lord” (Col. 2:7 TLB), we need to keep growing our writing skills. We need to “work hard so God can say to [us], ‘Well done’” (2 Tim. 2:15 TLB). My mother used to say, “Practice makes perfect.” While we are not likely to achieve perfection, there is no better way to develop our ability with words than to practice – daily!

“Follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s,” the apostle Paul said (1 Cor. 11:1 TLB). Are there other writers whose example you are striving to follow? Even if you may never meet them face to face, you can learn from them by studying what they have written and listening to workshops they have taught. Because I believe this is so important,

CDs from the 2010 Colorado
and Greater Philly Christian Writers Conferences
are available at 50% off the normal price of $6 each
for all of January.

For every five CDs purchased, you get one additional CD free. The 2010 info is still posted on the conference websites (see below). The Philadelphia website has a CD order form. Shipping is only $1.50 for the first CD and .35 for each additional CD.

Finally, I hope you’ll plan to come to the May 11-14 Colorado and/or the August 10-13 Greater Philly Christian Writers Conference. Both conferences will again feature a faculty of over 50 professional authors, editors, agents, and publicists; earlybird workshops on Wednesday; 8 continuing sessions; plus 42 workshops or 4 hands-on clinics! ALSO – 4 (yes, FOUR) free one-on-one 15-minute appointments with the faculty of your choice if you attend the entire conference plus a BONUS fifth appointment for the first 50 registrants.

Next week I will begin posting info to the conference websites. Our 16-page brochure for the Colorado conference should be in your hands the first week of February if you’re on our mailing list. It also will be posted on www.writehisanswer.com/Colorado before online registration opens February 1.

Registration for the August 10-13 Philly conference will open April 1.

Thank You, Father, for the gift of this new year and for the opportunities to serve You through the ministry of words. Help us to “be strong and courageous and get to work” (1 Chron. 28:20 TLB).

Do you feel called to “write His answer” and yet struggle with self-doubts? Truthfully, through working with hundreds of writers through the years, I find that the those who really have a gift with words and a message that needs to be published are the ones most likely to be crippled by self-doubts.

I shudder when I think of how many times I almost gave up because my self-doubts were so loud and insistent. Why would anyone want to read what I wrote? I What made me think that I could write for the Lord? I wasn’t qualified! How could He possibly use someone who was only a high school graduate? I felt ashamed and woefully inadequate.

How it must have grieved the Lord when I failed to see that the Cross turns my minus into a plus – when I believed the lies of the evil one instead of His promises. And how much time I wasted in my self-centered and selfish focus on my doubts instead of on the needs Father was calling me to address through the words He would give me if I would just trust Him.

I’m presently reading Joel Rosenberg’s new novel, The Twelfth Imam. When I saw the following subject line in an article from ASSIST News yesterday, I immediately knew it was about him: Author of End Times Political Thriller Hits New York Times Best Seller List with His Latest Middle Eastern Novel. What I didn’t know was that when Joel got the idea to write “a political thriller – a Middle East-based terrorism story that would have the Gospel woven into it,” he “didn’t know how to write a novel.” He says,  “I’d never written one before. I’d never even taken a class on writing a novel and I didn’t even like to read novels. So that was a problem.” I hope you’ll go to ASSIST News at http://www.assistNews.net/stories/2010/s10110053.htm  // to read the rest of the story of how God used someone who was not qualified and who, as he admits, “didn’t know how to write a novel and . . . didn’t have a story.”

Father, thank You for calling us to do what seems impossible and for Your faithfulness to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond as we choose to listen to You and not to our doubts.
